2299 yuan play AR, Nreal Air glasses evaluation: Sony Micro OLED awesome!

Even optimistic Lao Luo predicted that AR would not get up until five years later, but his colleague Nreal made a big attack on August 23. The National Bank version of the Nreal Air is priced at 2299 yuan, and the real AR glasses Nreal X are priced at 4299 yuan. As commented by netizens, "Redmi" came out first before the "iPhone" of AR has been released.

The promotion of the Nreal rich and the popularity of AR made the Nreal Air screen on the night of the press conference. Three days after the draft was delayed, our evaluation studio of the world's top 500 also came to report (no proper food, safe to eat).

Configuration and Description

Nreal Air and the old Google Glass ↑

Nreal Air uses mobile computing power and power supply, using Birdbath optical scheme, two 1920x1080 Sony Micro OLED screens, FOV (field of view angle) 46 degrees, 49 pixels/degree (PPD), 90Hz refresh rate, eye brightness 400nit, 3DoF head tracking, 79g, priced at 2299 yuan.

AR glasses have three elements: AR display, AR spatial perception, and natural physical interaction. However, Nreal said that the previous survey of the use scenarios of Nreal Light users found that most users mainly used video watching, but did not use much AR functions, so there was Nreal Air: remove some AR related parts, only retain the AR display ability, significantly reduce costs and heat, advocate AR viewing, and easily make mobile phone/computer extended screens.

Therefore, we need to adjust our expectations first. Nreal X is used to catch up with Microsoft HoloLens (it is still difficult for 7-year-old people to surpass it), and Nreal Air is an intermediate product in the transition from VR to AR "Transparent VR, put Xiaomi transparent TV on your head" All are pertinent comments.

The actual benchmarking product of Nreal Air is not a game type product such as Meta (Facebook) Oculus Quest2, but a VR glasses similar to Sony PS VR2 in the viewing direction. Its physical rivals even include projectors and laser televisions.

So Nreal Air's In fact, there are three core observation points: unnatural wearing, display effect, and whether the picture can be fixed in physical space.

Is it unnatural to wear it?

Color contrast environmental protection packaging with a bit of Nordic flavor: the scroll is opened as well, the pill shaped storage box contains the glasses body, with purple and white instructions, lens wiping cloth, and three nose pads of different sizes. The storage box has its own compartment, and the lower layer is 1.2 m long double C-mouth braided line and the warping piece for nose replacement.

The whole body of the Nreal Air is frosted. Except for the elastic material embedded at the end of the glasses leg, the mold workmanship and quality are OK. But this material, no kidding, really absorbs oil. A big hand sweat is just a touch of a mark, which can leave a handsome eyebrow mark.

Comparison of Nreal Air with ordinary glasses and Google Glass ↑

What is the experience of wearing glasses of about 80g?

Streamline saving: better than the previous VR glasses, but there is still a long way to go for the industry to reduce weight.

The measured weight of the Nreal Air body is 80.5g, the net weight of the nose rest is 2.1g, and the myopia lens (both left and right eyes are 500 degrees) cooperated with Isilo is 4.4g. The whole set is close to 87g, and 27.8g braided line is hanging.

As a reference, the plastic frame glasses are 16.8g, the ordinary mobile phone silicone shell is 20g, and the Nanfu No. 5 battery is 24.3g. Among the daily necessities, the closest weight to the Nreal Air is probably the wireless mouse with No. 5 battery.

Among AR/VR products, Google Glass is 50g, Oculus Quest 2 is 507g, and Microsoft HoloLens 2 is 566g.

It is impossible to say that there is no feeling. After all, the weight of the wireless mouse is on the bridge of the nose. But in a reasonable way, the lighter fuselage makes the Nreal Air It is much more comfortable to wear than the VR/MR glasses before. The key is that there is no head strap, so it is neither hot nor stuffy

The mirror leg has three adjustable angles ↑

The default angle of the Nreal Air mirror leg is very narrow, and the head is clamped by the 40 ° elastic opening and closing range. The good news is that the clamp is very stable, and there is no obvious drag feeling when turning the head quickly. It is not easy to fall down, and even running with it is barely possible. It is a strange feeling that the glasses are pulling the flesh of the nose up and down. The bad news is that it is too tight, and the contact part behind the ear will be a little painful.

On the contrary, the braid unexpectedly has no sense of existence. Except for paying attention to it when wearing glasses, it has no sense of existence most of the time.

The Nreal Air body is a kind of glasses shape, which cannot be used with ordinary glasses. Myopic users have to use special glasses lenses. But the distance between the eyes and the myopia lens is very close, and sometimes the eyelashes will scratch the lens

My 500 degree myopia will be more obvious than the vertigo of users without myopia and low degree myopia. There are two core sources:

  • The pupil distance/optical center between different glasses will be slightly different. When switching between ordinary glasses and Nreal Air myopia glasses, myopia users need a certain time to adapt. This kind of feeling can complement the vertigo experience of newly changed glasses.

  • The second is the "cognitive vertigo" caused by the coincidence of the front and vertical directions of the naked eye and the three pictures of virtual reality. In the office lighting environment, the picture directly below the glasses will also be partially reflected into the field of view, which has the feeling of lazy glasses. One thing to say is that the vertigo of Nreal Air is very similar to that of lazy glasses.

The Nreal Air is 3DoF, and the actual head tracking is quite fast. The positioning of the virtual reality image in the physical space is good, but the depth (front and back) tracking is average.

In terms of styling, I think the light blocking lens on the outside of the Nreal Air is too large, and the size of the Nreal X will be more natural. Wearing Nreal Air on the street will not attract passers-by's attention, but passers-by can perceive your level with a little use of God.

As for portability, it is one of the core advantages of Nreal Air. Nreal Air can't be folded flat like ordinary glasses. It is about 5cm thick when folded, but at least it can fit into the pocket. The diameter of the official storage box is 8.5cm, which is a little longer than the canned cola. The weight of the whole package with the data line is not enough.

Display effect: Micro OLED awesome!

AR displays three main technologies Birdbath, curved mirror (wormhole), and reflection/diffraction waveguide. The waveguide solution is the famous Microsoft HoloLens, Maigc Leap One and DAQRI. And the Nreal Air is the same as Lenovo Mirage AR head display ODG R8/R9、OPPO AR Glass 2021, The Birdbath scheme is used : The screen is in the horizontal direction of the glasses, about the height of the eyebrows, and the 45 degree spectroscope is in front of the field of vision.

Micro OLED screen information on Sony official website ↑

Using the Micro OLED screen at the EVF electronic viewfinder level of the camera is the key for Nreal Air to control volume and thickness.

The EVF electronic viewfinder on the no reflection camera may be the finest screen that normal people can encounter. Sony released the 0.5-inch, 5.6 million point, 240Hz EVF electronic viewfinder screen in 2018 (9.44 million points on the A7 S3 in 2020, 2048x1536). At that time, the resolution was 1600x1200, the pixel spacing was close to CMOS, only 6.3 μ m, and the maximum brightness was 1000 nits. Its biggest disadvantage is that it is expensive. At that time, it was priced at 50000 yen, equivalent to about 2500 yuan.

Now four years later, Nreal Air has two Sony Micro OLED screens of 1920x1080, and the product price is only 2299 yuan

The actual effect is really "EVF electronic viewfinder on the camera and Xiaomi transparent TV on the head".

The equivalent pixel density ppi of these two Micro OLED screens is 4000, more than 10 times higher than that of common mobile phones. The common 1080P screen phone is generally less than 400 ppi, the iPhone is about 460 ppi, and the 2K screen phone is about 520 ppi.

The optical focusing distance of Nreal Air is 4 meters. With a screen as high as ppi, the field of view angle is limited to 46 degrees, which is a large part smaller than the 90-100 degrees of VR. Therefore, the fineness has also reached a higher level. The angular resolution PPD (generally understood as the ppi combined with the field of view angle) is more than twice that of 1440p screen VR glasses.

If the field of vision of VR glasses is large and blurry, then Nreal Air is small and clear. The alchemist of steel is right, they are all equal exchange.

Our pilots on Shenzhen Bay 1 have seen countless machines, but we were surprised by the fineness of the screen of the Nreal Air for the first time (and then experienced a similar feeling on the Avata UAV head display in Dajiang on August 25).

If Microsoft HoloLens's AR world is like a mosaic of Nokia's non smart phones, and VR glasses are 480P 100 yuan smart phones, then Nreal Air has jumped to the level of Redmi's "1.5K screen".

You even need to focus hard to see the pixel sawtooth, which is totally different from the big fruit of VR glasses, And the edges will not have the same details or color loss as the projection.

Actual shooting in sunny days (the edge is the frame of glasses)

Real shot in sunny shadow (the edge is the frame of glasses)

Office lighting environment, the effect of brightness adjustment from high to low ↑

In addition to the fineness, the screen brightness is also better than expected. What is the concept of 400 nits of eye brightness? LCD mobile phones generally have an extreme brightness of 450-600 nits, while Nreal Air has a light shield outside, which can barely see the outline of the displayed content in the outdoor sun, and can clearly see the content in the shadow. It is fully available outdoors on cloudy days, and even needs to manually reduce the brightness of 2 to 3 gears indoors (the brightness of 7 gears can be adjusted), amazing, Sony Niubi! Micro OLED awesome!

It can distinguish the No.81 color block in the upper left of the 256 gray scale diagram, and the 14th line ↑ can be seen in the color test of antiques

Because the screen is too small, the 5000W pixel mode of the phone can not be photographed clearly, so the original picture can only be displayed. You can see whether the device on your hand can surpass the Micro OLED screen in AR glasses.

Left live shot, right original picture (unified red, white balance of mobile phone...)

The real shooting environment is sunny afternoon (the room temperature is 33 degrees). The lights are off and the curtains are closed. The background is actually a bookshelf, but the brightness of the screen is really high, completely masking the background information.

And this is OLED. When it displays black, it is close to pure black. It really has the smell of OLED TV. It is like watching a movie with the EVF viewfinder. High brightness+black field, the picture contrast is really top, The effect can kill tens of thousands of times of projection and laser TV, just two words - "transparent".

Then I have to talk about my shortcomings, The screen of the Nreal Air only covers 106.1% of the sRGB color gamut, and you can see the shadow when you turn your head/nod your head a little quickly. The PWM dimming is like a shadow of the OLED, and the field of view angle is really small.

The FOV of Nreal Air is only 46 degrees, slightly higher than the 35 degrees of HoloLens (VR glasses are often more than 100 degrees, while human eyes are close to 200 degrees). The official version is 130 inch screen 4 meters away, or 201 inch screen 6 meters away, which is really a very high EQ version. Our actual measurement of low EQ is that the distance from the desk is roughly equivalent to a screen of 27 inches (when sitting in front of danger) to 30 inches (when lying back).

Due to the problem of field angle, the immersion of Nreal Air, like HoloLens, is actually achieved by head tracking: although the range of pictures that can be seen is small, the virtual picture can be fixed in the air, and the effect is similar to using a 2-3 times telephoto lens of a mobile phone.

System interaction and other experiences

System screenshot ↑

Actual shot on cloudy day ↑

Nreal's APP can be understood as an AR/VR desktop launcher. By default, it is the effect of the above image. It is 120 degrees around you and unfolds in a circular way. With the mobile phone as the remote control, the front end of the mobile phone "shoots" the pointer in the air, which can be understood as Harry Potter's magic wand. It can place and zoom the window as Microsoft HoloLens does.

At most 5 windows can be opened at the same time. The integrated browser and image library, the B station, Ditto, and Tencent Video on both sides, are actually shortcuts to the corresponding web pages. Apps such as games and Migu sports live broadcast are basically installed and redirected in the form of independent apps.

App has direct projection screen and expansion screen mode options ↑

In fact, these experiences are not different from VR glasses. The most special feature of Nreal is the display mode of waterfall stream super long web pages. The web pages extending from the ceiling to the floor are very suitable for microblog and other information stream applications.

Because it is possible to connect computers, AR multi screen office is also a way forward, but it is not realistic yet. The current field of view angle and fineness are not enough. If the virtual window is too far away, you can't see the text clearly. If it is too close, you have to move your head to finish reading.

To see the text comfortably, you need to zoom in to the same size as the 24 inch 720P display, but the content of single screen browsing is too limited, even if you open five virtual screens, you can't draw it. The overall office gain effect is not as good as replacing a 43 "- 55" 4K screen, but it is really foreseeable in the future. Sony, take care of yourself and work hard again.

Fever: At a room temperature of 26 degrees, it has been used continuously for 40 minutes. The heat is almost concentrated on the left mirror leg (the side connected to the USB-C cable). The maximum temperature is about 47.4 degrees. The two noble Micro OLED screens are very calm.

The heating area of the mirror leg is suspended in the air, and the skin cannot be touched. There is no heat in the air-conditioned room. But in the current 33 degree takeoff, I can feel the faint heat on the left side.

Sound: Stereophonic effect is obvious, but the sound quality is very ordinary. It is recommended to use earphones when watching movies. The volume of 2/3 is just right. You can hear it clearly, but the people standing next to you can't hear it clearly. The extreme volume will not be too loud, but the hearing sense from 50cm away is close to that of speaking softly, so you can hear it clearly.

Device support: Nreal Air still has certain equipment threshold. Before placing an order, remember to check the latest support list on the official website. Nreal Air requires an Android phone with a USB port supporting DP video output to use it directly (not even Xiaomi's USB 2.0 machines).

The official adapter with a value of 799 yuan supports HDMI+Apple Lighting, which can be used to connect computers (the version has not been adapted yet) iPhone、Swicth, Declare that it will support PS and Xbox in a few months.

Endurance: Determined by the connected mobile phone, our test machine is the OPPO Find X5 Pro Snapdragon version. Under the debug of Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the mobile phone loses power about 30% in an hour, and the mobile phone is much hotter than glasses, Qualcomm!!!!!

At the beginning of use, I can only stick to it for 20 minutes by superimposing the adaptation problem of myopia glasses. And change back to the original glasses, and even have to adapt to a dizzy process of glasses change, Gan!!! But after several times of use, about 1.5 hours in total, I suddenly seem to get used to it, and I can use it for 1 hour continuously. Harmful. Maybe the low-frequency PWM mobile phones used to adapt in this way.

summary

At present, there is basically no so-called AR ecology, and the audience is still developers. Such as Top Player, AR Baokemeng, AR medical anatomy, AR mechanical structure analysis, and so on. They are also science fiction movies. Even the 7-year-old Microsoft HoloLens is still limited to a few industrial uses.

So looking back, in fact, the functional positioning of Nreal Air is very pleasing. It only retains AR display glasses, either transparent VR or transparent TV, The Micro OLED of Nreal Air really outperforms the projector and laser TV in the display effect. The official set the imaginary enemy as the projector and laser TV . If you buy Micro OLED screen, you can get AR/VR function.

In terms of display effect, Nreal also got endorsement from the Saixi Laboratory of the China Electronics Technology Standardization Institute, and made a comparative test of laser TV, projector and VR glasses (accurately positioned). In addition to the field angle and color gamut, the Micro OLED screen of the Nreal Air has stronger picture contrast, fineness (angular resolution), and eye brightness. Indeed, the visual perception is consistent with the data.

It has even obtained three certifications of low Blu ray+stroboscopic free+Eye comfort from Rheinland, and the latter is the highest level of display product certification of Rheinland. But I don't know whether it shows the reason of the principle, the halo or halo.

In addition, Dajiang released the Avata UAV on August 25, its 1080p Mirco OLED screen is also an excellent portable theater (VR/AR industry manufacturers surprised!). One thing to say, Sony's batch of Mirco OLED screens are really top.

For the audience who originally watched the film with VR glasses, it is estimated that the effect of Nreal Air will not disappoint you, and the price is completely acceptable. It is a truly private viewing equipment that can be taken out without embarrassment. After all, when you go out to watch videos with VR glasses that completely cover your eyes, others will think you are not sociable, When you take Nreal Air out, others will think you are blind
