It's finally here.
On June 6, Apple held the most powerful WWDC developer conference in recent years. The core protagonist is Apple Vision Pro, a hybrid reality head display with hardware fully capable of "re opening the first year of VR/AR".
Apple released five hardware and six system updates this time:
VR glasses Apple Vision Pro, 15 inch MacBook Air, M2 Ultra chip, M2 Max/M2 Ultra Mac Studio, M2 Ultra Mac Pro
VisonOS system of VR glasses, iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10, tvOS 17, AirPods and smart home devices.
Apple Vision Pro: One more thing
Apple Vision Pro is a solution to implement AR (augmented reality) in VR (virtual reality). You can switch between VR and AR modes through buttons.
Apple Vision Pro looks like a ski goggles: super curvature laminated glass+aluminum alloy body, mask and threaded headband all use a lot of fabric.
Connect the braided cable to the external battery for power supply, and the single battery can last for 2 hours. Use the "extremely advanced" battery replacement mode to achieve full day life (the coffin of Jobs will not hold).
Myopic users can use the magnetic myopia lenses (not wearing ordinary glasses) cooperated with ZEISS.
The control mode is eye tracking+gesture (no need to raise your hand to the front)+voice, no need to handle.
Incredible hardware configuration:
Two 4K Micro OLED screens with unknown refresh rate, but the total number of pixels of the screen is up to 23 million and supports HDR. For reference, the common 4K screen is 3840x2160, about 8.3 million pixels. The Pro Display XDR display from 39999 yuan has 32 inch 6016 × 338420.4 million pixels.
Apple M2 chip+R1 chip ("one picture, two chips"): M2's performance needs no more words, while the new Apple R1 chip is mainly used to process camera and sensor data, claiming to be able to transmit images to the internal screen within 12 milliseconds, faster than blinking.
There is a 3D surface OLED screen outside, and the user's face can be scanned inside. This system, called EyeSight, can capture the user's facial expression in real time. When someone approaches, it can automatically display the user's face on the screen, pretending that the head display is "transparent" ("one side of technology, one side of art", and the concept video of good products for use on the berry has been turned into reality by Apple).
There are 12 cameras, 5 sensors and 6 microphones, including eye tracking cameras and hand tracking cameras. There are cameras in the front, side and bottom, front lidar, infrared cameras and LED indicators inside.
"Apple's first 3D camera" can record 3D video+spatial audio (video and audio with depth information).
Use Optical ID iris recognition for biometric verification (should you be able to pay with WeChat/Alipay/Apple Pay?)
The visionOS system is designed by Apple for space computing: compatible with iOS and iPad OS applications, and has its own app store.
Microsoft Word, Excel and Teams have supported Vision Pro ↑ (as we all know, Microsoft is the best developer of Apple).
Apple Vision Pro can scan and model the real world, and then display the real world in the VR world. Applications/windows can float in the air like real objects, and can move and stretch windows freely.
Although experience and usage are close to Microsoft HoloLens. But it is like using VR technology to reproduce the AR augmented reality of HoloLens.
In the three major positioning "productivity tools (infinite screens), information terminals, and entertainment tools" of similar tools, Apple has intensively displayed conventional VR/AR applications such as VR theaters, video conferences, and VR wireless expansion screens for Macs, which are basically focused on content consumption and focus on (medicine, engineering machinery, etc.) The directions of Microsoft HoloLens for industrial use are obviously different (what are the things that mobile computers and other VR/ARs cannot do?)
Apple Vision Pro is priced at US $3499, or about 24860 yuan. It will be sold in the United States at the beginning of 2024 and will be launched in other regions later next year.
Only Apple Can Do
The verge live shot ↑
Unknown core specifications and experience: Weight, screen field angle and refresh rate (affect immersion and dizziness), accuracy of eye control and gesture control (smooth operation).
Whether or not we can achieve the level of Apple's promotional videos will not be known until mass production at the beginning of next year. Although there is always a power line in the promotional videos, it is true that there is a play.
The unprecedented dual 4K Micro OLED screens and unprecedented performance (M2+R1) of Apple Vision Pro are simply the reproductions of Apple's modern technology by Microsoft HoloLens (released in 2015).
Apple Vision Pro has more than 5000 patents for a single product. In front of it, including Microsoft HoloLens 2 ↑, all the products of its friends can only be called semi-finished products. Its screen, performance and application ecosystem are far away from its friends, and it can't copy any of them. Apple's self-developed chips, iOS/iPad OS application ecology, and Apple device linkage are all trumpets.
The price of $3499, or about 24860 yuan, seems outrageous. But by contrast, the retail version of Microsoft HoloLens 2, launched in 2020 with Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 and second-generation holographic processing units (4GB memory+64GB UFS 2.1), also costs $3500. Is it a sudden that Apple is a great philanthropist?
In addition to technology, price is also the key to determine whether Apple Vision Pro can change the world. Only when the cost is reduced can it be popularized. The non Pro version of Apple Vision to be released later will have to be at least reduced to the 10000 yuan level similar to the iPhone Pro series before it can be "popularized".
Victory of Sword Divine Region, No. 1 player, and good products for berry use
In the cold economic winter, foreign VR/AR manufacturers (Microsoft, Facebook Oculus, HTC Vive, Nyal, Pico, Luo Yonghao, etc.) treat Apple Vision Pro like "aunts" - afraid that it will not come, but also afraid that it will go wrong.
But the real happy and bad thing must be the VR/AR content manufacturers. Sword Paradise and Top Player are about to become reality.
VR/AR has been over declared for too many times, and the "first year of VR" hyped in the capital market is hard to hear. Which year is the first year of VR? I hope this is the last "VR first year".
