On May 10, Howell Technology released a new 60 million pixel sensor, OV60A, with a unit pixel size of 0.61 μ m in a low profile. This is the world's first high-resolution CMOS image sensor with 0.61 μ m pixel.
In terms of core specifications, OV60A is 60 million pixels, 0.61 μ m unit pixel size, 1/2.8 inch, with 3:4 and 16:9 frame configurations. After 4 in 1, the equivalent of 15 million pixels is 1.22 μ m (after synthesis, it is only as large as the unit pixel of Sony IMX700 with 50 million pixels...). It supports interleaved HDR, up to 15 million pixel 60fps video recording with EIS electronic anti shake, and 4K 60fps video recording is not a problem.
Its most special feature is that it supports the "normally open" low power consumption mode, including ambient light sensing mode and low power flow mode for wake-up, which will save more power when used with various AI functions.
It claims to use PureCel ® The Plus-S chip stacking technology reduces the area of 0.61 micron pixels by 24% compared with the previous generation 0.7 micron pixels, but claims higher quantum efficiency (QE), better crosstalk and angular response. Supports dual I/O voltage rails (1.8V and 1.2V) and CPHY interfaces.
Howell Technology said that OV60A is suitable for front and rear ultra wide angle cameras. After all, the low-power mode that is normally open is really only meaningful when it is used on the front camera. While 1/2.8 inch is very strong in the front end, it is estimated that many manufacturers will use the OV60A for the main camera according to the convention. After all, the CMOS is small, but the 60 million pixel number is scary. 1/2.8 inch is the main camera size of Android flagship around 2016.
The process of cell phone CMOS unit pixel becoming smaller:
1.0 μ m in 2015
0.9 μ m in 2017
0.8 μ m in 2018 (Sony IMX586 debuted)
0.7 μ m in 2019 (Samsung SOCELL Slim GH1)
0.61 μ m in 2021 (Howell OV60A)
Although the reduction is 0.1 μ m each time, the base number is getting smaller, so the degree of reduction is actually getting larger. However, CMOS is a device that "kills people at the first level". The unit pixel becomes smaller, which is not conducive to imaging. Facts also tell us that the GW3 (0.7 μ m) with 1/2 inch 64 million pixels may not win the IMX586/598 (0.8 μ m) with 1/2 inch 48 million pixels. However, if the light environment is good, the discrimination advantage of high pixels is very obvious. It is suitable to take a group photo or a landscape.
