On January 26, it was reported that South Korean media ETNews reported that the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and Apple Watch Series 7 released this year planned to be equipped with blood glucose detection function.
The people who need blood glucose meter most are diabetics/elderly people, but to monitor the blood glucose concentration, they usually need to take blood for monitoring (finger pricking, etc.). A Japanese company called Quantum Operation displayed a smart watch measuring blood sugar with a small spectrometer (Raman spectrum) this year at CES ↓. The key point is non-invasive monitoring (no need to take blood) and completing the test within 20 seconds, but the test data of the prototype on CES still has a large fluctuation.
A Korean company called Philosys Healthcare is also developing blood glucose measurement technology that does not require blood sampling. Samsung Electronics also published the technical research on non-invasive blood glucose measurement based on Raman spectroscopy in the scientific journal Progress in Science.
According to the South Korean media ETNews, Samsung has decided to add the optical blood glucose detection function to the Galaxy Watch 4 in the second half of this year, which can save diabetics from the trouble of repeatedly poking their fingers every day and provide effective data for health and diet concerns. Also preparing for optical blood glucose is Apple. ETNews said that Apple also plans to add similar technologies to Apple Watch Series 7.
If the exposure hits, this will be the fourth sensor upgrade of intelligent wearable devices after ECG sensors, ECG monitoring (popularized in 2018-2019, but with a low penetration rate due to the need to pass safety tests in different countries), and blood oxygen saturation monitoring (equipped with almost all updated products in 2020).
