Textbook style win-win, Samsung smart watch and Wear OS share increased significantly
Textbook style win-win, Samsung smart watch and Wear OS share increased significantly

On November 23, it was reported that after Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 series switched to Wear OS, its market share increased from 10% in the same period of the previous year to 14%, while the quarterly market share of Wear OS jumped from 4% to 17%, an increase of 325%.

According to the new global smart watch tracking report released by Counterpoint Research, the global smart watch shipments in the third quarter of this year increased by 16% year-on-year, continuing the double-digit growth momentum of the previous quarter.

Samsung, the most powerful of them, released its Galaxy Watch 4 series in August this year, including Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic. The biggest change of this generation is that it switched from its own Tizen system to the One UI Watch system based on Google Wear OS.

The cooperation between the two sides is a textbook win-win situation. The shipment volume of Galaxy Watch 4 series is far higher than expected. Samsung has set its own quarterly shipment record. The shipment volume of smart watches is only second to Apple, accounting for 14% from 10% in the same period last year, while the quarterly market share of Wear OS has soared from poor 4% to 17%.

  • Apple will still be the first in the third quarter of 2021, but its market share will decline to 22% from 28% in the same period of the previous year, partly because the data of Apple Watch Series 7 will not be reflected until the fourth quarter.

  • Huami Amazfit ranked third by virtue of its performance in the European market, with its share slightly rising to 6% from 5% in the same period last year. For well-known reasons, Huawei fell from the second place in the same period of the previous year (14% at that time) to 5%.

  • Indian brands grew rapidly this quarter. Noise and boAt, which ranked first and second in India's smart watch market, have more than doubled their shipments from the previous quarter.

The price of smart watches in the market is not very high. In the third quarter of 2021, 2/3 of smart watches will sell for less than $100 (about 640 yuan). Sujeong Lim, senior analyst of Counterpoint Research, said: "More than 60% of the total shipments of the Galaxy Watch 4 series are sold to North America and Europe, where middle and high priced models account for a relatively high proportion. To further expand market share, Samsung is expected to launch low-cost models in the fast-growing Asian market in two or three years.".

Compared with the change in the proportion of manufacturers, the change in the operating system of smart watches is even greater. Wear OS soared to 17%, second only to Apple's watch OS (22%), followed by Huami's Amazfit OS, Fitbit OS and Lite OS.

The smart watch market is still full of competition, and many manufacturers have developed their own systems or RTOS systems (the one that is ridiculed as a large bracelet system). Counterpoint Research predicts that as users pay more attention to third-party APP support, the proportion of true intelligent systems will increase. However, domestic users may have another opinion.
