Although the 5G era has passed, most video websites are still at the level of 4K 30 frames. The future of 8K TV and 8K monitor seems to be far away. But on July 7, Fraunhofer HHI (Fraunhofer Telecommunication Research Institute) released the new video codec standard H.266/VVC (Versatile Video Coding), paving the way for 8K video.
H. In short, 266/VVC is a standard for 4K/8K video preparation in the future. It was jointly developed by Fraunhofer HHI (Fraunhofer Telecommunication Research Institute), Apple, Ericsson, Intel, Huawei, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Sony and other co manufacturers, and established the MC-IF (Media Coding Industry Forum), which includes 30 companies and organizations.
People may not be familiar with video coding standards, but now the main video coding standards in the market are H.264 and H.265. The main improvement of the latter is that the video size can be directly halved without losing the image quality. That is to say, the original 2GB video needs only 1GB after the new encoding.
H. The function of 266 compressed video size can save a lot of bandwidth, so that we can watch higher definition online video at the same network speed, and video conference, live broadcast and other purposes will benefit. On the content production side, it will reduce the capacity and speed requirements of the camera on the storage device, and significantly reduce the production cost of ultra HD content.
However, H.265 is still on the way of popularization, and the mainstream still stays at H.264. As early as the era of iPhone 6 (2014), Apple has supported H.265 video encoding (used on FaceTime). However, because the old products cannot hard decode the video of the new coding standard, and the software performance and software side cannot be pushed forward. For compatibility, most of the videos of flagship mobile phones are still turned off by default.
Of course, it also takes time for H.266 to land. Fraunhofer HHI will release software supporting H.266/VVC this fall, and MC-IF (Media Coding Industry Forum) has been designing chips supporting H.266/VVC. One breath is 50% improvement, and there is no need to upgrade the network speed and other complicated and huge requirements. It is true that the broadband small pipes can be smoothly connected to 4K and 8K.
