It's clearer than your mobile phone! E-Ink screen breaks through 600PPI

E-ink e-ink screen is a screen on electronic paper books such as kindles. It is used on readers because the display does not consume power and only consumes power when turning pages. However, we have to say that this technology is subject to many technical constraints. Color, refresh rate and display density are all technical bottlenecks that cannot be broken through at present. The first technological breakthrough in display density on the e-ink screen occurred on the Kindle Voyage three years ago, when E-ink exceeded 300PPI (the number of pixels per inch).

On May 23, Japan Display Inc (also known as JDI) displayed 400 and 600PPI electronic ink screen products on SID Display Week this week. This new panel uses LTPS technology (low-temperature polysilicon, already used in some advanced LCD screens).

As a comparison, the common 5.5 inch 1080P screen is 401PPI, and the 5.5 inch 2K screen is 538 PPI. Only Sony Z5 Premium and XZ Premium equipped with 4K screens can have mobile phones with more than 600PPI in service. The reader with the highest fineness/PPI in service is a 6-inch 1440 * 1080 screen Kindle Paperwhite, Voyage, Oasis, and Nook GlowLight Plus and Aura One with a 6-inch 1430 * 1080 screen are all 300PPI.

JDI reached a strategic cooperation agreement with E-Ink at the end of 2016, and these two new screens are the first batch of cooperative products. JDI's two "ePaper: screens, which can provide four times the pixels and improve twice the image accuracy, but the actual resolution is only WXGA (1366x768) and FHD (1920x1080), still black and white, 40% reflectivity, 180 ° Viewing angle. It can be used for tablet, smart card and other IoT devices. Of course, the cost is the same as that of mobile phones. If it is used in mobile phones, tablets, and e-books, it needs a more powerful CPU to bring it up, and the power consumption will be higher than that of the original products.
