ZUK Z1 is packed in lunch box, with serial code and production information printed on the blue waist seal in the middle. The first layer of the package is the mobile phone, followed by the instruction box, and the bottom layer is the data cable and charger.
The small paper box includes a manual, a warranty, a game V-coin card "worth 240 yuan" and a card pick-up pin.
The output of the charger is 5V/2.5A, and the data cable adopts Type-C interface regardless of the positive and negative. The texture and hardness of the anti winding noodle cable are very similar to the serial port SATA cable of the computer.
Appearance and workmanship
There are white and gray versions of the ZUK Z1, and the test machine we got is the white version. The most obvious front is the square home key;
The back cover is slightly curved and made of smooth plastic, which is very neat.
The camera not only does not protrude, but also is slightly lower than the back cover, so it will not rub the lens cover when placed normally.
The body layout is relatively traditional, with the headphone connector on the top, microphone, Type-C connector and speaker on the bottom, sim card slot on the left, and volume and power buttons on the right.
The height of the card holder is basically the same as the frame, and the virtual position of the card holder cover is small. The connection between the antenna partition strip and the fuselage is very tight and flat, and the touch of the keys is tight. The workmanship is very impressive. The drawback is that the volume key of the engineering machine we got is slightly loose, and the height combination of the back cover and the metal frame is not very smooth. I hope it can be improved on an individual case or in the official version of the mass production machine.
ZUK Z1 collects the light and distance sensors on the left side of the receiver, which is a rare design. On the right is an 8 megapixel camera with a unit pixel of 1.4 μ m. The home key named U-Touch supports fingerprint identification. There is also a circle of plastic between the machine screen and the metal frame. Specifically, it is slightly lower than the screen and higher than the metal frame (that is, the screen itself is the highest).
Between the back camera and the dual flash, there is a noise reducing microphone, and the other is the hot silver logo of ZUK.
The 5.5 inch body is plugged with a 4100mAh large battery, and the weight of 175g is normal. It will give you a sense of weight, but after all, the corners are curved, so it feels good to hold.
Netizens generally have different opinions on the appearance of the machine. Personally, the main penalty item is that the chin is too long, and the space above the Home key is larger than that below, which gives a sense of instant vision of Samsung S3.
The so-called suspicion of plagiarism is a bit unjustified. The measured maximum brightness of the ZUK Z1 is about 453 nits, which is lower than the MX4 and Xiaomi 4 which are both IPS screens, but the brightness is still higher than the R7 Plus which uses the AMOLED screen. The pressure to see the screen clearly in the sun is small.

The screen of ZUK Z1 performs well in saturation and contrast. Its red performance is similar to that of the normal IPS screen, but its blue and green colors are more gorgeous, and its saturation is even close to that of the AMOLED screen. When displaying color pictures, the contrast performance of ZUK Z1 is quite eye-catching. In the scenes that need high contrast (sunset proof), it can display many dark scenes that cannot be displayed on the IPS screen.
System and interaction
ZUK Z1 is equipped with a new system called ZUI. Its interface has changed a lot, and there are some interesting details.
The system icon adopts an abstract and minimalist style, but there are many gradient and shadow elements. The desktop cancels the secondary menu, and all applications are directly displayed on the desktop. There is an application notification corner, and the clock application icon can also display the time directly.
The notification bar at the system level is only used to place notifications. Pull up to call up the "suspended" control center. The card type task manager supports task locking (protection) and one click cleaning. It is easy to use and familiar with.

The dialing interface has been optimized by one hand. Usually, the top function label is placed on the side, and the position can be switched from left to right as required. The device also has its own yellow page service.
Although some system applications are relatively simple, it retains the commonly used advanced functions such as double click on the screen, application notification corner, and shortcut switch position customization.
The system security center is responsible for providing domestic necessary functions such as garbage cleaning, flow monitoring, self startup and authority control, and anti harassment, and its completion is also high.
ZUK Z1 uses an entity key called U-Touch, which is an enhanced version of Meizu's mback button. It supports five functions: tap to return, press to home, double-click to enter the task manager, slide left and right to switch applications, and support fingerprint identification.
Although it still needs a little time to adapt to the operation logic of the home page by tapping back, the task manager can be accessed by double clicking, and the function of switching applications from left to right is really easy to use.
In addition, although its physical keys can complete all the work, it also has common touch keys (but no backlight), which can be quickly mastered and used for the first time.
It may be because the home key area of the ZUK Z1 is large, and its recognition speed is much faster than that of the iPhone and S6. It is even close to the model that uses the back fingerprint identification module, and its performance is very excellent.
In addition, although this is a new system, Lenovo may have provided a lot of help. It is basically a full version of the system, and there are no bugs or flashbacks in the use process. In terms of stability and function realization, it is much, much better than the Hammer ROM in those years and the current hydrogenated OS.
Performance and USB read/write
In terms of performance, ZUK Z1 uses Snapdragon 801+3G memory+64G ROM. The former is a 4-core 2.5GHz Krait 400 architecture, and the GPU is Adreno 330.
We find Xiaomi Note and Moto X that also use Snapdragon 801, MX5 that uses MT6795, Meilan Note that uses MT6752, and Huawei Glory 7 that uses HiSilicon Kirin 935 as comparison.

In terms of CPU performance, Snapdragon 801 is better than Snapdragon 808 MT6795、 Kirin 935 is weaker, but the core scheduling mechanism of the latter two is not perfect, and the frequency and number of cores are controlled conservatively, so the actual use experience is not as smooth as 801.
In terms of GPU performance, Snapdragon 801 is slightly weaker than 808, but stronger than MT6795, while Kirin 935 and MT6752 are far away.
In terms of flash memory reading speed, which directly affects the loading speed of applications and games, HiSilicon cannot even win the MTK's mid-range SoC, and still ranks at the bottom. The MT6795 is slightly stronger, while the Snapdragon 801 and 808 are better.
Because the performance and power consumption control are quite balanced, the Snapdragon 801 has always had a good reputation. However, as the standard SoC of the flagship machine in 2014, it really needs the courage and awareness of the manufacturer to face Xiaobai's misunderstanding when it is used on the machine in the second half of this year.
Although it has been in service for a long time, the actual performance of Snapdragon 801 is still better than flagship products of friends such as MT6795/Kirin 935 even now. On this point, the author still supports the choice of manufacturers.
Large file transfer test
The ZUK Z1 is the first Type-C interface phone that supports the USB3.0 specification (the Type-C interface of LeEco and OnePlus does not support USB3.0). Use the USB2.0 and USB3.0 interfaces of the computer to drag 623MB, 760MB and 1100MB files to the phone respectively for USB transmission speed test.
The measured average speed of USB 2.0 is about 25MB/s, while that of USB 3.0 is 58-73MB/s. The transmission speed of the latter is 2.4-2.9 times that of the former, and the speed increase is very significant.
1.1G movie files can be put into mobile phones in about 18.7 seconds, which can save a lot of time for users who like to watch movies on their mobile phones or use USB flash drives. In addition, this makes the built-in 64G storage much more practical.
Fragmented file transfer test
The 190kb folder containing 168 files and the 1.67m folder containing 706 files were used to test the transmission of fragmented files, respectively. The transmission speed of USB2.0 and USB3.0 was negligible.

The ZUK Z1 adopts a 13 million pixel Sony IMX214 sensor, with an aperture of f2.2, and supports optical anti shake. The front end is an OV8865 sensor with a unit pixel of 1.4 μ m and 8 million pixels. From the configuration point of view, their weak light performance (especially the front camera) should be good.
ZUI uses the most concise camera application at present. There is no one: the photo and video buttons are separated, and only the most basic flash HDR、 Front and rear camera switch button. The up stroke calls out the filter, and the down stroke calls out the panoramic and fast recording functions. There is a slider to adjust the exposure on the right side of the focus frame.
Judging from the performance of previous models, the performance of IMX214 with Snapdragon 801 is not too bad. The focusing and imaging speed of ZUK is fast, and the algorithm processing of HDR is put after continuous photos, so the use experience is relatively smooth.

The photometry and white balance of ZUK Z1 are relatively accurate and stable, and the tolerance is also a normal performance of IMX214. Although the algorithm sharpening is not obvious, the analytical power/sharpness performance is good. The noise of the image after extreme magnification is somewhat like an OV sensor. The optical anti shake lens has some deterioration at the edge of the picture, but the range is not large.

The degree of HDR of the ZUK Z1 is relatively light. The details of the two parts and the dark part are kept in place. The effect is relatively natural. There is no obvious ghost phenomenon or ghosting, and the usability is high.

The night light measurement accuracy of ZUK Z1 is much more accurate than that of Moto X Pro, which is also an optical anti shake IMX214. The glare control is excellent, the picture brightness is close to that seen by the naked eye, and the color saturation is high.
The overall tuning is similar to Samsung S6, which only uses moderate algorithm to smear. The image has some noise but retains rich details. However, its aperture is only f2.2. Under outdoor light and extreme low light, the picture will still have more noise.

From the sample parameters, the front camera is also f2.2 aperture, and the viewing angle range is slightly smaller than the rear camera. The front metering is slightly dark, and the white balance tends to be slightly red (for taking portraits?).
The performance of the front camera is worthy of its 8 million pixel rating, but there must be a distance between the discrimination and 13 million pixels. In weak light, the optical anti shake IMX214 still uses 1000 ISO, and the front of 1.4 μ m unit pixel only needs 1000. In addition, the shutter is one gear faster, so the advantage of large pixels is quite obvious, and the performance in extreme weak light scenes such as KTV, night games may be stronger than the rear.
In general, the performance of this rear camera slightly exceeded the author's expectations for the optical anti shake IMX214 (Moto X Pro/Xiaomi Note: blame us for our poor night view). White balance, light measurement, and even edge degradation control and discrimination performance can rank higher among domestic mobile phones.
The analytical power of the front camera can clearly shoot each pore when taking a selfie, and the advantage of large pixels enables it to play a stable role in weak light. Unfortunately, its wide angle range is too small, and the selfie stick has to help when taking a group photo.
Endurance heating&others
The battery capacity of ZUK Z1 is 4100mAh, which is about 37% larger than the 3000mAh battery of 5.5 inch screen equipment. However, Snapdragon 801 is also Qualcomm's flagship SoC, and its power consumption will still be higher than that of MT6795 and other SoCs. Its endurance is expected to be slightly worse than that of R7 Plus with 4100mAh batteries, but the flagship used to abuse 3000mAh batteries should be more than enough.
After the high-intensity test of half an hour of large-scale games+half an hour of wifi Internet access, the endurance of the ZUK Z1 and the R7 Plus with the same 4100mAh battery are unmatched, leaving the models with 3000mAh batteries such as Xiaomi Note (Snapdragon 801) and ZTE Axon (Snapdragon 810). Once again confirmed the truth that battery is necessary for endurance.
The room temperature is about 30 degrees. After running 2K15 for 30 minutes, the highest temperature on the front of the fuselage is 46.7 degrees, and the highest temperature on the back is 44.5 degrees. The heat is concentrated near the volume key on the right side of the fuselage. In actual touch, the heat transfer of the plastic back cover is slow and not sensible, but the metal frame is really hot.
The decibel meter is 10cm away from the microphone. At the same time, "Foam" is played at the maximum volume. The measured maximum volume is 94.6 decibels. The external sound is very loud, and the opening is downward, so the risk of missed calls is extremely low. However, the sound quality is satisfactory, slightly thin, and high frequency is sharp.

The ZUK Z1 is fairly balanced in industrial design, system, performance, photography, and endurance. The product itself has some special selling points, including the entity Home key that integrates all interactive functions and can switch applications from left to right, the Type-C interface that supports USB3.0, extremely fast fingerprint recognition, and the capacity of 64G at the beginning (if this is also counted).
Its performance is totally different from that of the first mobile phone of a new brand, far better than that of the hammer in the same period last year. Of course, just like the addition of OPPO, this has something to do with the Lenovo behind ZUK. The overall impression of the machine is that it is unexpectedly balanced. It is a mobile phone that is not top notch but has almost no short board.
