Both front and back can be evaluated by YotaPhone 2
Both front and back can be evaluated by YotaPhone 2

The smart phone YotaPhone from Russia released their latest dual screen smart phone YotaPhone 2 on MWC 2014. The biggest feature of this phone is that it has an electronic ink screen on the back. Although it has not been officially launched yet, the Russian media has preempted this "national gift" and made a review for us.

In fact, before APEC this year, the people who followed YotaPhone were only a few mobile phone enthusiasts, digital product controllers and geeks. However, on APEC, this mobile phone was presented to President Xi Jinping by Russian President Putin as a national gift, and YotaPhone 2 also took this opportunity to become famous. After all, this is not an honor that all electronic devices can obtain.

Appearance design:

YotaPhone 2 is the second dual screen smartphone launched by the company. Compared with the old model, the new model uses a more rounded appearance. The only similarity between the two models in appearance design may be the dual screen design.

Due to the round appearance and dual screen design, the appearance of YotaPhone 2 is completely unique among today's square smart phones. In addition, the round body also makes YotaPhone 2 feel very comfortable in the hand, and the back of YotaPhone 2 also has a certain radian. It seems that the designer has a high pursuit for the hand feel of the phone.

In terms of body size, YotaPhone 2 is close to Nexus 5 in size, but longer than Nexus 5. In terms of thickness and weight, it is similar to many 5-inch smart phones.

The front of YotaPhone 2 is very low-key, and there is no logo to indicate the identity, only the earpiece, sensor and front camera.

The NanoSIM card slot is directly integrated on the volume button on the right side, and the volume button can be taken out together by poking the card taking pin into the round hole. This is a good design to reduce the opening of the body. The power button is placed below the volume button to facilitate control.

Of course, the most noticeable thing on the back of the fuselage is the e-ink screen. On the top is an 8 megapixel camera and a single LED fill light, and on the bottom is the logo of YotaPhone.

Screen performance:

The front screen of YotaPhone 2 uses the Super AMOLED screen from Samsung. The 5-inch 1080p specification is a very common specification in high-end smart phones at present, which has about 440 ppi in equivalent. The electronic ink screen behind is 4.7 inch 460 × 960, with 16 levels of gray scale, and the edge is curved to fit the curve of the back of the phone.

The AMOLED screen on the front of YotaPhone 2 is covered by a gorilla glass 3, which also has an antifouling coating. As for the color and brightness of the screen, it is similar to Samsung Galaxy S4, but YotaPhone 2 has no built-in screen mode adjustment option.

The maximum brightness of YotaPhone 2's main screen is 327 nits, which is only a passing level for high-end smart phones. Fortunately, AMOLED screen has the inherent advantage of ultra-high contrast, so even outdoor use should not be too problematic.

The average color temperature of YotaPhone 2 is about 6300K, very close to the ideal 6500K.

As for the gray scale deviation, YotaPhone 2 also performs well, with an average Δ E value of 2.51, which is satisfactory.

In terms of screen color gamut, YotaPhone 2 is far beyond the standard sRGB color space. It can be seen that the color saturation of this screen is very high.

However, in terms of color accuracy, the screen of YotaPhone 2 is also a typical AMOLED style, with obvious oversaturation of color, and overall restoration is not accurate enough.

In terms of average color deviation, the Δ E value of YotaPhone 2 is 4.32, which is not too bad on the whole, but there is still a significant gap between the color accuracy performance of Samsung's top AMOLED screens.

In terms of the subjective perception of the screen, YotaPhone 2 is very excellent. The super high contrast and super wide visual angle are both commendable, and the gorgeous colors are also more pleasing. But if the audience likes accurate color restoration, the screen of YotaPhone 2 may not be your dish.

Performance and storage:

The Snapdragon 800 processor built in YotaPhone 2 has been out for a long time. At present, the 801 processor with better performance has been widely used, and more and more mobile phones will use the 805 processor. However, the Snapdragon 800 processor can cope with all daily operations without pressure.

YotaPhone 2 currently runs Android 4.4.3 system and can be upgraded to Android 5.0 in the future. YotaPhone has not made much customization for the system, and it is basically the same as the native system in terms of UI and functions. In addition, YotaPhone 2 uses 32GB of non expandable memory,

Endurance:

The 2500 mAh battery built in YotaPhone 2 does not sound like much. At present, the battery of mainstream smart phones has reached 3000 mAh, but there is no need to worry about the endurance of YotaPhone 2. In the test, this 2500 mAh battery can provide nearly 10 hours of video playback time, which is already good.

If you can flexibly use the electronic ink screen on the back of YotaPhone 2, the endurance of YotaPhone 2 is excellent. In our test, YotaPhone 2 can maintain normal use for 3 to 4 days at most, and even if you don't deliberately use the electronic ink screen on the back, the endurance of YotaPhone 2 can maintain 1.5 to 2 days, which is very good.

In addition, there is power management software inside the phone, which can help users save power. Users can even set the AMOLED screen to black and white display to save power.

In terms of charging, YotaPhone 2 is compatible with all Qi wireless charging devices, and a wireless charging base is included in the package when you buy the phone.

System:

YotaPhone 2's system is almost the original Android 4.4.3, and its functions are similar. However, YotaPhone has built in some Yota's own APP to manage the electronic ink screen behind it.

Of course, this e-ink screen of YotaPhone has also opened the SDK to third-party developers to further play the role of the back screen. At present, on the e-ink screen, users can view the current status and notifications of the phone, choose to display pictures or weather information and clocks, view calendars, and even display screenshots on the home screen.

The real use of the e-ink screen is reading. YotaPhone can install a special APP to search for readable content and present it on the e-ink screen. It can be used for reading in a well lit environment and has a very good experience. We can even run some small games on this e-ink screen, such as chess or Sudoku.

Photo function:

8 megapixel camera

The imaging ability of YotaPhone's rear camera can only be said to be average. The quality of the photos taken in sunny conditions is acceptable, but when the light is insufficient, the noise is very serious, and the overall tone of the photos is slightly gray.

For users who like taking selfies, the 2.1 megapixel front camera of YotaPhone 2 may not be enough, but YotaPhone 2 can use the rear camera to take selfies. At this time, the viewfinder is the electronic ink screen, which is barely usable.

Summary:

YotaPhone 2 The local price in Russia is 32990 rubles (about 3760 yuan), and there are many flagship phones of other brands at this price, such as Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Sony Xperia Z3, etc. The YotaPhone 2 is not only a little backward in performance, but also has a big gap in screen quality and photography. The relatively expensive price also determines that the YotaPhone 2 is only a plaything for a few people, However, the dual screen design of YotaPhone 2 really makes it different, and YotaPhone has also fully exploited the maximum value of the electronic ink screen on the back of the phone. For people who like new, unique and innovative phones, YotaPhone 2 is a shining diamond.

advantage:
