1080P Pioneer HTC Butterfly Evaluation
1080P Pioneer HTC Butterfly Evaluation

At the end of 2012, a series of 1080P Android phones exploded, first HTC Butterfly opened the door of 1080P, then OPPO Find5 And nubia Z5 They all followed up in a timely manner. Their common point is that they all used the SoC of APQ8064 with 1080P full HD screen and 2G Ram top configuration. The protagonist of today's evaluation is HTC Butterfly, the pioneer of 1080P mobile phones.

In terms of parameters, Butterfly can definitely be called a top-level configuration, and the parameters in all aspects are very balanced. Of course, the most dazzling one is the 5-inch 1080P screen. However, its screen technology is different from the IPS used by Find5 and Z5 previously reported. Butterfly uses HTC's popular screen technology SLCD, and SLCD3 has never appeared before. In addition, Butterfly's front camera is also a feature. It uses a 2.1 million high pixel, 88 degree wide angle, F2.0 aperture front camera, which is much better than other similar machines. But the rear camera is relatively conservative, still maintaining at 8 million pixels. Butterfly also seems "petty" in terms of ROM capacity. As a flagship product, it has only 16G ROM and does not support tf card expansion, which is compared with 32G or even 32G of the previous flagship One X One X+ 64G is really a bit jerry built.

appearance

In the previous HTC Butterfly and Nubia Z5 pictures, we have introduced the appearance of Butterfly. Here we will talk about the appearance of Butterfly in detail.

Front, Butterfly front A large 5-inch screen looks very angry ▼

A close-up of the earpiece. The earpiece is red and long. The bevel design of the edge is also very special. There is a large front camera in the upper left corner.

Below are three touch keys, which are designed with a red backlight. Unfortunately, the backlight is not so uniform. The multitask (menu) key on the right is brighter than the other two, which may be an individual problem.

The back of the fuselage is a large piece of baking material, which looks very dazzling, but has a very big disadvantage - it is easy to scratch. The Butterfly on my opponent has taken care of everything, but still cannot escape the fate of the back being scratched. This is a black model. I wonder if white and gray have the same phenomenon.

A close-up of the camera with a led fill light beside it.

There is also a circle of holes on the left side of the camera, which can easily be mistaken for a noise reduction microphone. In fact, it is a LED signal light. This design is very novel. Even if the machine is placed upside down, you can see missed calls and messages through this signal light.

Below are HTC's relatively standard shapes, beats logo and a loudspeaker.

The top of the fuselage is a SIM card slot, a power key, a 3.5mm socket and a noise reducing microphone. This side is still designed with baking varnish.

At the bottom is a microUSB connector (with dust cover) and a microphone.

Butterfly's overall design is fashionable and handsome. Both the front and back are very distinctive, but the red anti slip holes on the side are not so exquisite, and the paint materials on the top and bottom are not so well made. In terms of grip, Butterfly's back uses a curved design. The whole machine is very close to the hand, and the weight of 138g is convenient.

I have to mention the Butterfly accessories here. I really can't think of any other words except "stingy"... As a 4799 mobile phone, it doesn't even have earphones, which is really unreasonable. Butterfly's big beats logo on the back, let's not say whether the sound effect is good, but at least a headset that can play the sound effect should be equipped to look like a big factory. Compared with the previously tested One X+(Hong Kong version), Butterfly's box is smaller, the data cable is less well made, and a headset is missing. I don't know where Butterfly's flagship performance is. The "lunch box" is still the "lunch box", but the contents have shrunk (the left is Hong Kong One X+, the right is BOC Butterfly) ▼

UI

Butterfly's UI, like One X+, is also based on Sense 4+in Android 4.1.1, so there is no difference in the UI. I won't introduce it in detail here.

The desktop still has a strong Sense style.

Shortcuts and settings of the drop-down bar are integrated.

The program menu has a lot of third-party software built in and can't be deleted... This can only be solved through root or machine cleaning. Of course, it also loses the qualification of BOC warranty, which is still very contradictory.

Butterfly comes with the NFC function. When you open the NFC, the taskbar will prompt you, which is also rare and commendable. Note the white small box in the figure ▼

screen

Because of the particularity of Butterfly's screen, this part is specially introduced. Butterfly uses a 5-inch 1080P full HD SLCD screen, but it is believed that the parameters have inspired many "screen controllers". Indeed, the appearance of Butterfly means that the mobile phone resolution has officially entered the era of full HD. The visual feast brought by 1080P is believed to have made many users salivate. Let's analyze Butterfly's top screen.

Screen effect

The effect of 5-inch 1080P is believed that we all know from some field tests of Find5 and Z5. It is true that the ultra fine effect brought by full HD is very attractive. Here are some live pictures to see how powerful this SLCD3 screen is.

The color performance of this SLCD3 is not very different from that of IPS, and it even makes people feel that this is the vest of IPS screen.

The visual angle is still excellent.

There is no doubt about the fineness. The 5-inch 1080P screen ppi has reached an astonishing 441, which is also the highest in mobile phones.

Problems caused by 1080P

Although 1080P looks very beautiful, it will also cause many problems. Most Android applications have not been optimized for such a high resolution. The direct result is that many third-party software has virtual icons, fuzzy menu fonts and other phenomena, and some even have misplaced interfaces. For large games, 1080P has also become a big obstacle. Various compatibility problems also cause huge load pressure on GPU.

Some maps are squeezed to one side when Baidu input method selects skin ▼

The thumbnail of Weibo is pitifully small. It will be further reduced under 1080P ▼

The built-in translation software also has the problem of too small text.

Of course, these are not big problems. When 1080P screens gradually become mainstream in 2013, software optimization of high resolution will naturally follow.

performance

Performance is also a very important part of our concern. Can APQ8064 afford such a high resolution? I believe many readers will be interested. However, due to many limitations of BOC mobile phones (lack of GMS and temporarily unable to Root), we cannot conduct detailed tests on Butterfly, so we can only conduct a preliminary evaluation of Butterfly's performance. After the corresponding Root and Recovery of BOC mobile phones appear in the future, the author will make up the detailed performance test of Butterfly as soon as possible.

Theoretical score

In the evaluation of Anthare, this software has been said to be rotten. Although it is not reliable, it still needs to run symbolically, and successfully broke 2W points. Pay special attention to the graph score. Butterfly's performance is still "ferocious" in 1920 * 1080, and the graph score is close to Nexus 4 and Xiaomi 2, which also use Adreno 320 with much lower resolution. What does this mean? Adreno 320's resolution at 1080P level and 720P level is almost the same in the run scores assessed by Anthare, which also proves that this run score software can not accurately reflect the gap in graphics performance.

Nenamark2.4

Under 1080P, Butterfly can still run to full frame and play normally. At the same time, it proves again that the load of this software is not large enough. Most products reach the level of 5X frame or even full frame. The reference is not high... should NenamarkV3 come out?

GLBenchmark2.5.1

The professional graphics scoring software accurately reflects the GPU performance. Butterfly performs normally, at the same level as Nexus 4 and Xiaomi 2.

Vellamo

The website scoring software launched by Qualcomm includes comprehensive tests on website performance such as Sunspider, Google V8, and website zooming. Butterfly's performance is amazing, at the same level as the eye-catching Galaxy Note II in previous tests. It is now the strongest score in mobile phones, which is sufficient to demonstrate HTC's powerful optimization ability in website browsing performance.

Sunspider

Web page javascript test to measure CPU single thread capability. An interesting phenomenon was found in the test. Baidu's browser+T5 core, which has always been "divine oil", had a low score of 1500ms, while Baidu and its own browser without T5 core were both at 1100ms (the lower the score, the better), which also proved that Butterfly really excels in web page optimization.

Actual performance test

From the point of view of running score, Butterfly can be said to have delivered a satisfactory answer. What about the actual use? The following is the actual application test.

1. Desktop, web page and other fluent demonstration videos.

2. Game demonstration video.

3. Video decoding

As for the hard solution capability of APQ8064, it can support 1080P ref=16 fps=60 mp4 hard solution, but the frame number is only 20, which obviously does not meet the requirements of smooth playback. Software decoding is used here, and the number of frames basically reaches 30 fps, which is also a high score. Now the Exynos 4412 and Exynos 5250, which are the most powerful in general computing, are only at the beginning of 30 frames. Hard unlock frame number ▼

2160P ref=3 fps=24 mp4, average frames (soft solution) ▼

photograph

Butterfly has used 8 million backlit cameras, aperture F2.0, and a series of HTC optimization technologies, so the photo effect is still expected. The author will add special tests on its cameras and other flagship machines, so I will not elaborate here. The following is a screenshot of the photographing interface, with many ▼ software functions

Indoor live shot samples ▼

signal

Butterfly's signal is much stronger than that of One X+. In the evaluation of One X+, it is found that it has no signal in the elevator, while Butterfly still maintains a full signal state (using mobile cards), and the signal strength is about - 75dBm (measured in the elevator), showing excellent performance.

fever

Butterfly's heat control is poor. After 15 minutes of automatic running, I found that the whole back was a little hot, which is different from the local high temperature of ordinary mobile phones. And this is the result of no contact with mobile phones. It seems that Butterfly needs to be further optimized.

consume power

Butterfly's battery is relatively small compared with other large screen mobile phones, with only 2020mAh. In fact, after three hours of moderate intensity use, the remaining power is 28%, which is satisfactory.

other

Butterfly supports IP55 waterproof and dust-proof standard. The following is the splash test video

In addition, there is a small problem that Butterfly cannot turn off the screen for charging, that is, the screen is on for a long time when charging, showing the charging power, which may be a small problem for some "obsessive-compulsive" users (it is said that most HTC national mobile phones have this situation).

summary

As the vanguard of 1080P, Butterfly's performance is quite good, but in terms of product details, workmanship and accessories, it is somewhat disappointing. The SLCD3 screen of 1080P brings an impressive feeling. At first glance, APQ8064 is enough to cope with 1080P resolution. Of course, this conclusion cannot be reached too early. After all, many "hardware killer" applications have not yet been tried. In the next series of evaluations, the author will conduct more in-depth tests on Butterfly's performance.
