Qualcomm's "self-developed CPU" Nuvia revealed: 12 cores, benchmarking Apple M1

On November 7, the foreign informant @ Za_Raczke released the news of Qualcomm's first Nuvia chip, claiming that it will be a 12 core processor architecture with 8 performance cores and 4 energy efficient cores, with memory and cache specifications similar to Apple M1.

@Za_Raczke said that Qualcomm's Nuvia chip code is Hamoa. The product is defined as a desktop processor. It uses the Nuvia Phoenix architecture, 8 personality cores+4 energy efficiency cores, similar to Intel's 12/13 generation Core 8P+4E, with a total of 12 cores. It also has memory and cache configurations similar to Apple's, but will not appear on Windows devices until 2024.

The book said that the last time, Qualcomm bought CPU processor design company Nuvia in March 2022 with 1.4 billion dollars, or about 10.1 billion yuan. Gerard Williams III, one of Nuvia's three co founders, is the chief chip designer who left Apple two years ago.

However, Qualcomm's Nuiva chip has been postponed once before. It is rumored that its earliest plan is to sample in August 2022 and launch in 2023, but the sample has been postponed to 2023, and mass production and commercialization will not be completed until 2024.

The CPU performance of the Android camp has lagged behind Apple's A series chips for several consecutive years. The public architecture of Arm is to blame, which is an important motivation for Qualcomm to acquire Nuvia. Arm even filed a lawsuit against Qualcomm for this and asked Qualcomm to destroy the Nuvia design.

This lawsuit also leads to a "overlord clause": after 2024, the SoC based on the public CPU of Arm will not be allowed to use the self-developed IP such as the GPU of a third party.
