Samsung's second chip factory in the United States has been finalized: invest 17 billion dollars and put into production in 2024

On November 24, Samsung finally chose Taylor, Texas, to build a new chip factory after investigating several potential factory locations in the United States, with an estimated total investment of 17 billion US dollars (about 108.7 billion yuan).

The new factory will produce advanced process products for mobile devices, 5G, HPC high-performance computing, artificial intelligence and other fields. It will break ground in the first half of 2022 and is planned to be put into operation in the second half of 2024. Including construction and equipment, it is estimated that the total investment will be 17 billion dollars, which will become Samsung's largest investment project in the United States.

The Taylor factory will cover an area of more than 5 million square meters, and will become one of Samsung's most important semiconductor production bases together with the new production line in Pingze, South Korea. It is expected that more than 2000 high-tech jobs and thousands of related jobs will be created after the full operation, and a Samsung skill center will be established locally to provide internship and recruitment opportunities.

Samsung entered the United States in 1978 and established the Austin Wafer Factory in 1997. Now, the total number of employees in the United States is more than 20000, and the cumulative investment in the United States is more than 47 billion dollars, about 300.4 billion yuan.

Samsung's Austin Wafer Factory is located about 25 kilometers southwest of Taylor. The former occupies about 28% of Samsung's production capacity (data at the beginning of the 21st century), has 14 nm, 28 nm and 32 nm product lines, is Samsung's largest production base outside South Korea, and currently has 10000 employees.

At the beginning of this year, Bloomberg reported that Samsung planned to build an LSI wafer factory in Austin, with an estimated monthly production capacity of 70000 pieces, and planned to provide 1800 long-term jobs within 10 years. At that time, Samsung's exchange condition was to reduce its local and Austin taxes, amounting to more than 800 million dollars. In the end, Samsung chose Taylor. In addition, as early as September 21, the local Austin Financial News reported on Samsung's investment plan, but it was not officially announced by Samsung until November 24.
