Apple will eat 53% of TSMC's 5nm production capacity

On February 8, it was reported that Counterpoint Research, a statistical agency, recently released the latest statistical data and forecast, saying that Apple would become the largest customer of TSMC's 5nm process this year, giving the proportion of different manufacturers in 2021 and revealing a lot of hidden information.

Counterpoint statistics show that in 2020, the revenue of chip OEM industry will reach 82 billion US dollars, an increase of 23%. It is expected to grow by 12% this year to reach 92 billion US dollars. In addition to the increase in wafer shipments, wafer prices will also rise by about 10%.

Counterpoint predicts that the proportion of 5nm capacity in 12 inch wafers will increase from less than 1% last year to 5%, and 80% of the capacity will be used for mobile phone products. The 7nm process, which is more widely used and has larger output, is expected to account for 11% of the 12 inch wafers, but only 35% of them are used for smart phones.

Apple will become the largest customer of TSMC's 5nm process. Apple alone accounts for 53%, higher than all other manufacturers combined. These are mainly Apple's A14, M1 and A15 that have not yet been released.

Then came Qualcomm, accounting for 24%, mainly the 5nm Qualcomm X60 baseband equipped with the new iPhone. Followed by Samsung 5% AMD 5%、 Nvidia 3%, MediaTek 2%. This data predicts the output of flagship products of AMD, Nvidia and MediaTek this year, which may not be very significant.

AMD will be the largest user of 7nm process, accounting for 27%. NVIDIA accounts for 21%, Qualcomm 12%, MediaTek 10%, Intel 7%, and Apple 6%.
