According to the second quarter 2020 smartphone OLED market shipment report released by UBI Research on August 24, OLED screen shipments in the international market are undergoing dramatic changes:
Affected by the COVID-19 epidemic, OLED shipments in the second quarter of this year dropped by 13.4%, from 124 million to 107 million, down 16.6% compared with the same period in 2019
The mobile phone market has 87 million OLED screens (107 million in total), a sharper decline of 17%, down 23.1% from the same period last year
The sharp drop in OLED shipments was mainly due to the sharp decline of 40.3% in rigid OLED shipments. Even a 38% increase in flexible OLED shipments with a smaller base could not make up for the decline
Zhong Haoyi, CEO of UBI Research, said that the sharp drop in rigid OLED was mainly due to the reduction in the production of low-end smartphones by Chinese mobile phone manufacturers. At the same time, China's OLED technology is catching up. In addition to producing OLED products close to Samsung, domestic OLED manufacturers also have subsidies from the Chinese government, making the price of domestic OLED in China only 60% of Samsung's.
He also said that the increase in the use of OLED by Chinese mobile phone manufacturers would lead to a more lively OLED industry, but Samsung Display's OLED business might stop growing because of domestic OLED manufacturers.
