On July 3, MediaTek officially released its flagship TV chip S900 (MT9950). This is the first TV chip on the earth that supports both WiFi 6 and 8K, in addition to supporting 8K video output and decoding( 8K@60FPS )Its built-in AI processor also has 1.6TOPS computing power.
In fact, MediaTek S900 chip has been released and announced mass production in September 2019, when it was expected to start external supply in early 2020. Skyworth released its new flagship Q91 before CES 2020 on January 7. The latter is a 75 inch IPS screen with 8K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. It is equipped with MediaTek S900. The Samsung Q950 and Q900 series OLED TVs released on March 11 and the Hisense A7F released on April 16 should all use the MediaTek S900.
The code of this chip is MT9950, and the 65 inch OLED of Xiaomi TV Master released yesterday uses the MTK 9650 of its next gear. The CPU part of S900 (MT9950) is 4* [email protected] , GPU is Mali G52 2EEMC2@800MHz , maximum support 6.5GB memory, support 8k@60fps Hard solution, supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+and other standards, MEMC with a maximum of 4K120Hz, and HDMI 2.1a with a maximum of 48Gbps. The most special thing is that it integrates AI processor (APU) and AI sound DSP (M4 architecture).
Its AI processor can provide 1.6TOPS computing power. What is the AI computing power? In 2017, the NPU (based on Cambrian 1A IP) on Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 970 was 1.92 TOPS, while Apple A12 was 5 TOPS. Of course, for TV chips, this is indeed a top class existence. Its AI chip and voice DSP are mainly used to improve the voice assistant experience of TV.
WiFi 6, however, is now basically supported only by flagship phones, and its bandwidth level is enough to replace the gigabit network cable. Although the TV can actually be connected to the network cable, it is also good to let the living room pull one less network cable. I wonder if it can be used as a WiFi 6 hotspot later.
