On July 20, according to Bloomberg, Minoru Kikuoka, CEO of JDI (Japan Display Company), revealed in a recent interview that JDI is developing OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) screen panels that are more sharp, power saving and easier to produce. He also said that he was negotiating with his customers on "co investment in the next generation OLED". They had no intention of capital expenditure war with competitors, and customers showed great interest in their commercial cooperation.
Apple often cooperates with upstream component manufacturers to improve the stability of the original supply and control the price. Recently, it was reported that Samsung had made a huge compensation to Apple. In fact, it was the wager agreement made by Apple and Samsung when they were working together on a new production line (as a result, Apple's demand failed to meet the contract requirements and the compensation was paid). This JDI negotiation may also be similar to the situation of Samsung that year.
JDI has always been a major manufacturer of high-end LCD screens, and the iPhone LCD is made by JDI. However, since the iPhone X in 2017, Apple and even the entire industry have begun to move to OLED. There are only iPhone SE 2, iPhone XR and iPhone 11 at the "entry" level for Apple's LCD models.
Even though the iPhone XR sold well last year (Apple accounted for 60% of JDI's revenue), JDI's performance in 2019 still fell 20.8% (revenue 504 billion yen, about 33 billion yuan), with an annual loss of 101.4 billion yen, about 6.64 billion yuan.
Although we are still shouting "LCD will never be a slave", JDI has lost money for six consecutive years. It's really time to wait. LCD has become a real sunset industry. JDI family chart (source: Moore News):
