Samsung Brain Hole Patent Exposed: Six Tilting and Ejecting Cameras

After the Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Z Flip came out, it seems that Samsung, who used to be passionate and open-minded, has returned. The foreign media LetsGoDigital recently exposed Samsung's multi camera solution patent, and Samsung unexpectedly wanted to use a six camera array to take panoramic photos and videos on its mobile phone.

This patent was obtained in December 2019 and was published on June 11. In the 55 page document, Samsung borrowed the principle of insect compound eyes, "piled" multiple cameras that can control the tilt angle together, and then combined them into better panoramic photos.

This is actually a common way to shoot professional panoramic photos. The Nokia OZO virtual display camera, which costs hundreds of thousands of dollars, is constructed in this way.

The panorama shooting of Android 4.3 in ancient times is to guide users to take photos from different angles and then merge photos. The patent of Nokia OZO and Samsung is to take panoramic photos from all angles at one time through multiple cameras.

The key to the patent is the tilt capability of the sensor. The camera is usually placed horizontally, but when taking panoramic photos, it will tilt in different directions, and each camera is responsible for shooting from one angle. According to the patent, this camera array can even take panoramic photos with virtualization effect, and it will perform better in weak light scenes, and have better HDR effect.

Interestingly, several giants taking photos on mobile phones are going in completely different directions. Google always hopes to use algorithms so that as few cameras as possible can squeeze out more potential. Samsung seems to be keen on hardware, such as variable aperture, parameter violence telephoto on the Galaxy S20 Ultra, and this 6-camera patent.
