On May 27, it was reported that ARM yesterday released a new generation of CPU, GPU and NPU architecture design, including Cortex-A78, Cortex-X1 CPU, Mali-G78 GPU and Ethos-N78 NPU.

Cortex-A78 is a new generation of high-performance CPU core launched by ARM, ARM officially said that after combining the latest 5nm manufacturing process, the performance of Cortex-A78 is 20% higher than that of the previous generation A77 per watt, and the frequency can reach 3.0GHz. Under the same performance, the power consumption is reduced by up to 50% compared with A77, and the area of a single core is also reduced by 5% (the area of a quad core cluster is reduced by 15%), which can make more space for other components in the SoC.

Cortex-X1 emphasizes performance more than A78. It is the first product of the ARM Cortex-X Custom project. Its peak performance is 30% higher than Cortex-A77, its machine learning performance is twice higher, and its integer computing performance is 22% higher than that of the same generation of A78. However, Cortex-X1 has a larger core area, so it is more suitable for combining three A78 and four A55, It is used as the only super core in the chipset (at this time, the area of the chipset will increase by 15%).

The new generation GPU Mali-G78 is designed for mobile devices such as mobile phones, tablets and VRs. Its graphics performance is 25% higher than that of Mali-G77, and its energy efficiency and machine learning performance are 10% and 15% higher respectively. The performance of actually running games is 6% to 17% higher; The maximum number of cores supported by G78 has been increased from 16 to 24. In addition, the design of asynchronous clock domain has been introduced. GPU cores can work at different frequencies, which is more conducive to improving energy efficiency.

Mali-G78 also has a small modified version called Mali-G68, which is positioned at the middle end. Its core design is identical to that of G78. The difference is that it only supports up to 6 GPU cores, and uses a limit on the number of cores to separate the upper performance limit between products.

Ethos-N78 is the second generation NPU released by ARM, which is mainly responsible for machine learning tasks. Compared with the previous generation Ethos-N77, the peak computing performance of Ethos-N78 has been improved by more than twice, and the energy efficiency has been improved by 25%.

Of course, these products are basically prepared for mobile chips in 2021. It should not be difficult to see these ARM "public" architecture designs on the next generation chips of Qualcomm, MediaTek and other manufacturers.
