On November 9, it was reported by Gsmarena that MediaTek had officially decided to release its first 5G SoC at the MediaTek Summit on November 26, and showed some live photos of the chips, but there was no official information on parameters and functions.
As shown in the photo, a SoC named MT6885Z appeared on the publicity page. Referring to previous revelations, we can assume that the chip uses 7nm FinFET technology, has Cortex-A77 CPU and Mali-G77 GPU, supports sub-6 GHz network band, is equipped with the third-generation AI engine, and supports 80 million pixels, 4K 60fps video recording camera.
It is reported that MT6885 has been mass produced and should be delivered to mobile phone manufacturers in the first quarter of 2020. OPPO and vivo are potential customers of this chip.
MediaTek also strives to bring Helio M70 SA/NSA dual-mode 5G baseband and cheaper mid-range SoC to the market. The latter uses Cortex-A76 CPU and 7nm FinFET process, and they will be used in mobile phones of about 300 dollars (about 2100 yuan). The mid tier SoC is named MT6873, which reduces the size by 25% compared with MT6885, and its mass production cost is also lower.
However, it is expected that MT6873 will not be mass produced earlier than the second quarter of 2020, so MediaTek needs one year to enter the 5G mobile phone market at a lower price.
