Mate 20 Pro experience evaluation: ultra wide angle+ultra macro+five times zoom=all-purpose photography
Mate 20 Pro experience evaluation: ultra wide angle+ultra macro+five times zoom=all-purpose photography

As Huawei's flagship series, Mate series has always maintained an annual product cycle. However, in 2018, it was a bit late. Recently, the new successor finally met with you. It is also today's protagonist - Mate 20 Pro. The 7nm Kirin 980, the new triple camera combination of ultra wide-angle+ultra micro range+five times zoom, the 6.39 inch Liu Haiping, and the sleek double-sided glass design all show its flagship status. Let's experience the latest flagship of Huawei.

Appearance and unpacking

In terms of packaging, it is the consistent style of Huawei Mate series. The deep black color is matched with the product name. The lower part of the packaging box is a touch of red from Leica.

Mate 20 Pro adopts a large hyperbolic fringe screen in appearance design. The material is OLED, the screen size reaches 6.39 inches, the resolution reaches 1440 * 3120, and the pixel density is 538PPI.

The large screen has a strong visual impact. When combined with the hyperboloid screen, the overall design is also very round. The whole machine has a cobblestone like roundness.

The high configuration version is equipped with the function of offline fingerprint, which can also be used to unlock the phone when it is not convenient to use the face when the phone is placed horizontally.

The back is also made of large arc glass, and the frame is smoothly connected with the front and rear glass, so the grip is quite smooth and there is no feeling of pressing the hand.

There is also no foreign body feeling when holding the phone against the bottom corner of the palm. This rounded design still needs extra points.

The central position of the rear of the Mate 20 Pro is the camera module, which is different from the design of the P20 Pro, The Mate 20 Pro does not use a vertical tri camera arrangement, but instead uses a fill light on the upper left, a 40 megapixel conventional wide-angle camera (IMX600, no optical anti shake) on the upper right, a 20 megapixel ultra wide-angle camera on the lower right, and a 8 megapixel triple telephoto camera (with optical anti shake) on the lower left.

In terms of the layout of the fuselage, the right side is the volume key and the color contrast power key. The color contrast power key is Huawei's consistent style since P9.

The top is perforated with infrared sensors and noise reduction microphones. The system has built-in infrared remote control applications, which can be used to remotely control common household appliances after simple pairing.

At the bottom are the call microphone, double-sided SIM card slot, USB Type-C interface

Here is a question. What about speakers? In order to keep the frame as simple as possible, Huawei has integrated speakers into the Type-C interface. This design is rare. However, there are both advantages and disadvantages. While ensuring simplicity, there will be small problems that affect the volume after the charging cable is inserted. Fortunately, the popular dual speaker scheme is adopted. The earpiece can be used as a speaker at the same time, but the sound quality is not as good as the speaker at the bottom. In addition, the SIM card slot should also be noted. In addition to the SIM card, the NM card can also be inserted. However, this card is Huawei's proprietary standard and has not yet been opened for sale.

To sum up, the Mate 20 Pro's appearance is still worth affirming. No matter in design or feel, there is nothing to be picky about. It is not enough to say that it is the most beautiful model since the birth of the Mate series.

Screen and look

In terms of screen, the machine is equipped with a 2K+6.39 inch OLED screen with a resolution of 1440 * 3120 and a pixel density of 538PPI. (This test is an engineering machine. For more detailed test, please wait for the subsequent mass production version evaluation)

The first part is the highest brightness, which is about 500 nits in manual mode; In the automatic mode, there is a burst mode similar to Samsung, and the local maximum brightness can reach about 720nit.

In the objective parameter part, the color temperature is about 6700k in the standard mode; In terms of color gamut, the sRGB color gamut covers 92.2% (this screen can cover 100% of the sRGB color gamut, which may be due to a small problem with the engineering machine tuning); In terms of color standard, the average Delta E is 3.9, and the highest Delta E is 5.8.

In the bright mode, the color temperature is about 7500k, which is slightly cold; In terms of color gamut, the sRGB color gamut covers 138.5% (perfect coverage 100%), and the DCI-P3 color gamut covers 99.1%; In terms of color standard, the average Delta E is 5.2, and the maximum Delta E is 7.5.

In terms of appearance, it is OK. The edge of the curved surface is a little more green than Samsung, but it is not as bad as the legend. However, the intelligent resolution must be turned off. Although the intelligent resolution can save power by reducing the resolution, this screen is slightly dizzy under the non 2K+resolution. It is recommended to turn on the 2K+resolution in the whole process. After all, there is 4200mAh of large capacity battery supporting it, so there is no need to save this power.

performance

In terms of SoC, the machine adopts the latest Kirin 980, which adopts the most advanced 7nm process at present, and holds 6.9 billion transistors. In terms of architecture, Kirin 980 adopts ARM Cortex A76 architecture, which is the first SoC in the world to adopt this architecture. It is composed of two A76 with a dominant frequency of 2.6GHz, two A76 with a dominant frequency of 1.92GHz, and four A55 with a dominant frequency of 1.8GHz. It has a total of eight core designs, including multi gear designs of large core, medium core, and small core, to meet the performance requirements in different scenarios and improve the energy consumption ratio.

Processor performance

In terms of CPU performance, the Kirin 980 has improved significantly compared with the 970. Although GeekBench's single core performance can not catch up with the Exynos 9810, it easily crushed the Snapdragon 845, and its multi-core performance is a record for Android models. In addition to GeekBench, Pi and RAR are both record breaking achievements. It is no exaggeration to say that Kirin 980 is the SoC with the strongest CPU performance in Android camp.

Graphics Performance

High Pressure Pattern Test

In terms of GPU, the Kirin 980 uses the Mali-G76 MP10 from ARM. Compared with the Mali-G72 MP12 of the Kirin 970, it is a big improvement. This is also the weakness of the Kirin 970 compared with other SoCs of the same generation. Official data shows that the GPU performance of the Kirin 980 is 46% higher than that of the previous generation, and the energy efficiency ratio is 178% higher. However, compared with the CPU improvement, the GPU performance improvement is not so dazzling. Compared with the Kirin 970, the GPU performance has improved significantly, but it is still passive against the main competitor, Snapdragon 845.

Memory performance

Storage read/write performance

Storage, reading and writing have always been the advantages of Huawei series mobile phones. Although the reading and writing performance of the Mate 20 Pro does not reach the top level, it is definitely at the excellent level, especially random writing, which is almost the fastest smartphone model we have ever seen.

Photographing experience and imaging effect

In terms of imaging effect, although Mate 20 Pro is a three camera combination with 8 million+20 million+40 million pixels, the default output photo is 10 million pixels, which is the same as P20 Pro, and is the only output size of super night scene.

Top: super wide angle -- bottom: regular wide angle

The performance of the daytime proof is similar to that of P20 Pro. Sharpening and smearing are still very powerful. Tolerance, white balance and picture purity are all good. Even without AI scene recognition, the overall appearance is still quite satisfactory. However, as mentioned above, the size of the output photo is 10 million pixels, which is a little insufficient, mainly reflected in the details. Compared with the 12 million pixel model, it is a little vague. The 40 megapixel mode can effectively improve the performance of details, but it is a little inconvenient to use at the expense of zoom and ultra wide angle. Of course, non Maoist parties need not be so tangled.

The time to compete with the ultimate discrimination is the moment to reflect the power of the telephoto lens. The iPhone and Note9's 2x telephoto can't hold its head in front of the Mate 20 Pro's 3x light variable and 5x lossless zoom. The usability of 5x zoom is very strong, but the absolute discrimination and picture purity are slightly inferior to 3x light zoom. Combined with the influence of film yield, 3x light zoom is more practical in daily use.

However, they have to give way to ultra wide angle lenses. Ultra wide angle lenses are the most frequently used focus segments in daily life except for the conventional focus segments. In some places where the distance is not enough and the space is limited, the practicability is self-evident. And this year there is a 2.5cm super macro, which is very practical in life.

Night proof sheet

As for the night proof, there are still two modes. The default automatic mode and night view mode will be compared one by one. (Since Mate 20 Pro in this test is an engineering machine, it does not fully represent the final imaging effect of Mate 20 Pro)

Similar to P20 Pro, The night scene sample of Mate 20 Pro has a good overall appearance. The brightness, purity, noise control, sharpening and lens glare of the image are all good. However, similar to the daytime proof, the output of 10 million pixel photos in detail is less than 12 million pixels. In fact, the four models participating in this evaluation have strong night scenes. If you want to distinguish between them, the Mate 20 Pro and Samsung Note9 are in the same gear, and the Pixel 2 XL and iPhone XS Max are one gear lower.

Automatic mode and super night view

Left: Automatic Mode ---- Right: Super Night View

Left: Automatic Mode ---- Right: Super Night View

Compared with P20 Pro, the super night scene has changed a lot. Unlike P20 Pro, which is as bright as day, the new night scene mode is not as exaggerated in brightness as the automatic mode. The main differences between the two are: the automatic mode is ISO, the first group of samples even reached 25600, while the ISO of the night scene mode is 3200, which is compensated by the ultra long exposure time and algorithm; The second group of samples is similar, with ISO of automatic mode of 10000 and night view of 3200. The ultra long exposure time has resulted in a cleaner picture. The noise control is obviously better than the automatic mode. There is almost no graininess, and the details are retained better. The picture has a more layered sense, and the usability is still high. Users who want to pursue the best night scene quality can try it.

Photo experience

As for the photographing experience, Mate 20 Pro is basically the same as P20 Pro, and the operation interface and logic are almost the same. The biggest change is the addition of 0.6 times focal length, that is, super wide angle mode. Previously, dual/multiple cameras were usually divided into two camps. Most manufacturers focused on telephoto cameras, and only a few manufacturers used ultra wide-angle cameras. The P20 Pro is also a telephoto camp, equipped with a 3x telephoto, while the Mate 20 Pro integrates the ultra wide-angle and telephoto together at one go. The 8 megapixel camera is a 3x telephoto lens, while the 20 megapixel camera is an ultra wide-angle lens, which can be said to be a master. For the author, the use of ultra wide-angle lens is more extensive than that of telephoto lens in daily life, and the addition of ultra wide-angle lens should be praised.

In terms of shooting experience, the availability of automatic HDR is very high, but we still need to wait for the HDR shooting time during shooting, which belongs to a more conventional shooting experience. Compared with Samsung's "shoot as you go", there is still a slight gap. As for the super night scene, the experience is very similar to that of P20 Pro. Although the shooting time is still 4-6 seconds, the shooting picture is always the frame at the moment of clicking the shutter, and only the light and color information is collected later. Even if the hand shakes, the final imaging effect is not very good, and the usability is very high.

*This test model is an engineering machine. The imaging effect varies greatly under different firmware, and the photography effect may be slightly different from the mass production version

Endurance and charging

In terms of batteries, 4200mAh lithium batteries are built in the machine. Huawei Mate series has always been generous in terms of battery capacity. Large capacity batteries are also the basic guarantee of endurance.

We still use the 2-hour high intensity test for endurance, that is, half an hour of games, half an hour of video, half an hour of WiFi Internet access, and half an hour of 4G Internet access. The two-hour endurance test consumed 18% of the power in total, and the performance was relatively excellent. It was at the same level as the previous generation of products, and was in the first echelon of flagship mobile phones.

In terms of charging, the machine is equipped with a new 40W super fast charge. The maximum power can reach 36W at 20% of the power, which can be said to be quite brutal.

System and experience

In terms of system, the machine adopts the latest EMUI 9.0 system, which is developed based on Android 9.0, but similar to the past, it has been deeply customized, still has a strong Huawei style, and does not have many features of Android 9.0 native system.

The biggest change of EMUI is the change of UI. The old UI, which has been talked about for a long time, has finally been greatly improved. Although it is still different from the original Android, the new UI is finally worth watching.

In addition, Mate 20 Pro also has a new set of gesture operations. Different from the previous P20 Pro scheme, the new gesture operation adds the global return function of sliding on two edges. Home key and multi task operations are more common, such as up stroke and up stroke pause. However, the activation time of multi task is slightly longer, and there is still room for optimization.

In addition to conventional gestures, it also provides the function of drawing upward on both sides of the bottom to activate the intelligent assistant, which can be opened by users in need. In addition to the global gesture, Mate 20 Pro also provides three traditional virtual keys. Users who are not accustomed to gesture operation or feel that the efficiency of gesture operation is low can use the three traditional diamond keys.

summary

As the latest product of Mate series, Mate 20 Pro can be said to be a masterpiece of Huawei in the field of photography in the past two years. It integrates telephoto, ultra wide-angle and high pixel in one go. The 8 million pixel telephoto+20 million pixel ultra wide-angle+40 million pixel conventional wide-angle is still the only one in the current smart phone industry. In addition to the super night view function of home watchers, it still ranks first in mobile phone photography, In a short time, I'm afraid it's still difficult to catch up.

In terms of overall experience, The Mate 20 Pro is still amazing at the beginning. The large OLED double curved bangs screen has a strong impact. In addition, the design of the whole machine is very mellow. There is not much to be picky about, either in appearance or grip. If you have to pick a bone in the egg, there is probably a little imperfect screen and speakers integrated into the USB interface for simplicity.
