New toothpaste arrived! Performance test of Xiaomi 8 SE Snapdragon 710
New toothpaste arrived! Performance test of Xiaomi 8 SE Snapdragon 710

This is a tube of new toothpaste with sincerity

Snapdragon 660 was released on May 8, 2017. One year later, on May 23, we didn't wait for the upgrade model of 660, but we waited for Snapdragon 710.

Qualcomm claims that in order to meet the increasing domestic consumption demand, it has added Snapdragon 700 series between Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 600. But in most people's minds, Snapdragon 710 is the successor of Snapdragon 660. Unlike OPPO R11, which made its debut last year and dominated Snapdragon 660 for several months, this time it is Xiaomi 8 SE.

Considering the situation of Snapdragon 660 in that year, if there is no accident, Snapdragon 710 will be the standard configuration of almost all high-end mobile phones in the second half of 2018. Just for this historical significance, we should conduct a more detailed test and comparison of its performance.

Product analysis

If the Snapdragon 660 inherits many technical features from its previous flagship (Snapdragon 820/821) Snapdragon 710 has acquired the technology of flagship Snapdragon 845 of the same generation

  • The same 10nm LPP process as that of Snapdragon 845 was used;

  • The Hexagon 685 DSP of Snapdragon 845 is used;

  • The ISP is the Spectra 250 of the same generation as the Spectra 280 on the Snapdragon 845. It has a two-way 14bit camera. It supports up to 20 million pixels of dual photography, or 32 million pixels of single photography. It supports up to 4K30 frames of video recording;

  • Although the baseband is "only" X15 LTE, there are also Cat 13 uplink (150Mbps) and Cat 15 downlink (800Mbps), which support 4x4 MIMO;

  • The screen supports up to 3360 * 1440, or 2K+, and HDR10.

The performance we are most concerned about:

  • CPU part is 2 2.2GHz Kryo 360 Gold large core and 1.7GHz Kryo 360 Silver small core (based on A55) The Kryo 385 of Snapdragon 845 is based on the semi autonomous architecture modified by A75, while the Kryo 360 is based on Kryo 385 reduction/frequency reduction. Qualcomm claims 20% performance improvement The running score of Anthare increased by 22%, and the speed of web browsing increased by 25% and the speed of application opening increased by 15%.

  • The GPU is Adreno 616, the highest dominant frequency is 500MHz, and it is claimed to be improved by 25% , game and 4K HDR video playback power consumption reduced by 40%, and streaming media power consumption reduced by 20%.

In addition to CPU and GPU architecture ISP、DSP、 The baseband is not up to the level of rivals at the same level. "Invincible is the loneliest" is very suitable for describing the current Snapdragon 710 . However, from the configuration point of view, there are only two CPU cores, and the extent of multi-core performance improvement is worrying. and On the Xiaomi 8 SE, eMMC 5.1 flash memory is still used.

Performance comparison

In order to control the variables brought by the system and manufacturers, Xiaomi products are used uniformly this time. The comparison objects include the flagship of these two generations, Snapdragon 845 (Xiaomi 8) and Snapdragon 835 (Xiaomi MIX 2), Snapdragon 660 (Xiaomi Note 3) and Snapdragon 636 (Hongmi Note 5). Because Xiaomi 6X still has the limitation of multi-core performance output in the latest stable version system, Xiaomi Note 3 is used as the representative of Snapdragon 660.

CPU performance test:

  • Overall ranking: The CPU performance of Snapdragon 710 is about 1.3 times that of Snapdragon 636, 100-110% of Snapdragon 660, 90% of Snapdragon 835, and 70% - 80% of Snapdragon 845;

  • Single core performance: What's interesting here is that Qualcomm has 2.2G core frequency on Snapdragon 710 and 660, which is just convenient for us to compare the performance of the same frequency. The new architecture brings About 15% of the single core performance has been improved, and it almost meets Snapdragon 835. The stronger single core performance will bring some improvements to some games.

  • Multi core performance: In the Android platform that pays more attention to multi-core performance, multi-core performance is more valuable. But Qualcomm only gave two big cores, The multi-core performance is only competing with Snapdragon 660 (four big cores and four small cores). In the multi-core burst test required, Snapdragon 710 only led 660 in the RAR multi-core test by a small margin, but pi and GeekBench 4 multi-core test both lost to 660. It is hoped that the "low multi-core performance bug" can be corrected in the official version of the system.

GPU performance test:

In terms of GPU, Qualcomm is not so generous. There is a huge gap between different products. Snapdragon 710 is about twice as many as Snapdragon 636 and 1.4 times as many as Snapdragon 660, only about 50% of Snapdragon 835 and 40% of Snapdragon 845.

How to describe such GPU performance? It means that after stimulating the battlefield with high image quality, high frame rate and anti aliasing, it can only maintain 30 frames, and after reducing the image quality, it can maintain 40 frames of smooth operation.

Memory and flash performance test:

In terms of memory testing, Qualcomm's generation of Kryo 385/360 based on A75 has more serious memory latency than before, but multi-core performance in ternary combination testing is still growing at a high speed.

In terms of flash memory, including the unseen Xiaomi 6X, after the Hongmi Note 5, Xiaomi's random write performance test of flash memory this year has increased significantly, and its performance is closer and closer to that of the F2FS file system models.

But it's a pity that Xiaomi 8 SE, the Snapdragon 710, UFS flash memory is still not used, or eMMC 5.1 . Although this time we participated in the comparison of UFS models, their flash memory capacity is larger (under the same conditions, the larger the capacity, the faster the speed), we can not hide the gap between the two types of flash memory in terms of reading speed (continuous reading is almost 3 times, random reading is almost 2 times). The good news is that continuous read and write performance has less impact on daily use than random read and write performance.

Power consumption test

Power consumption of three modes of Hongmi Note 5 (636)

Basic power consumption of Xiaomi 8 SE (710) and power consumption of three modes

Basic power consumption of Xiaomi 8 (845) and power consumption of three modes

The power consumption of 845 running with all its strength is too high, and the output fluctuates in different degrees in the last two tests

The power consumption test (software test, the result is for reference only) is conducted through GPUGFLOPS 1.0 of Gunshen @ ioncannon. The screen brightness is the lowest, and the test is conducted in flight mode. The single test duration is 2 minutes, and the test interval is air-cooled. The above are static basic power consumption, 8-core full open CPU integer, CPU floating point and CPU MIX2 tests (with cache added). Their test pressure increases step by step.

Summary of original data of Snapdragon 636, 660 and 845

In the average GFLOPS (the higher the value, the stronger the performance) and power consumption (the lower the power consumption, the better) of single thread and multithread, there are two anti common sense results: on Xiaomi 8 and 8SE, the gap between single thread and multithread in integer testing is very small (it may be that the bottleneck of testing is not in the CPU but elsewhere? It may also be just a problem of testing software); The multithreaded floating point score of Snapdragon 710 is even higher than that of Snapdragon 845 (845 output fluctuates too much, which reduces the performance?)

The single thread score represents the power consumption of "1.8G Kryo 260", "2.2G Kryo 360" and "2.8G Kryo 385" respectively. The performance growth also brings about a near proportional increase in power consumption. The biggest feature of Snapdragon 710 is that it has only two large cores, and the power consumption growth times of single thread and multi thread are lower than the other two CPUs with "4+4" structure.

In each 2-minute performance output, The Snapdragon 710 and the Snapdragon 636 have not encountered any obvious heating wall (too high temperature will trigger frequency reduction), and the performance output is roughly proportional to the number of cores and power consumption. However, the performance output of Snapdragon 845 fluctuates too much. After the number of cores increases, the performance output fails to show a linear growth (the four cores and eight cores are not tested separately, which is likely to be a compatibility problem and cannot be used as a reference).

In addition, in software testing, the background power consumption of Xiaomi 8 SE under load is 560 mW, even higher than that of Red Rice Note 5 (450 mW) of Snapdragon 636. This may be the power consumption of other circuits/screens of the mobile phone, or it may be the power consumption of the Snapdragon 710 background.

Summary

Briefly summarize the performance of Snapdragon 710 The core improvement lies in the single core performance and GPU:

  • Compared with Snapdragon 660, its CPU single core performance is improved by about 15%, but The multi-core performance, which is more significant for daily use, has hardly changed. Not only did it not reach the official standard value, but also the range was so small that it was very suitable to use "squeezing toothpaste" to describe it. There are stronger large cores, but only two are given, which is obviously controlling the performance increase;

  • The GPU part needs a lot of sincerity, Increase by 40%. However, this increase is far from catching up with the previous flagship Snapdragon 835 (about 40% of the 835), let alone the Snapdragon 835. Qualcomm's poor positioning of Snapdragon 600 and Snapdragon 800 is very clear.

  • Of course, Android's CPU has long been a bottleneck, but GPU is still in the process of rapid growth, which has been recognized by the industry.

In addition to CPU and GPU, Snapdragon 710, network, ISP and DSP have improved significantly, but not as much as the previous Snapdragon 660 and 636. We seem to have been spoiled, but hopefully Qualcomm is not deliberately squeezing toothpaste.
