MediaTek: Taiwan's economic department has approved its supply to ZTE

It was rumored in the industry that MediaTek might also stop supplying chips to ZTE after the U.S. Department of Commerce banned American enterprises from selling components and technologies to ZTE. In the face of rumors, MediaTek issued a microblog statement late on April 28. According to the requirements of Taiwan's economic department, the company is actively preparing relevant documents to apply for the goods export license to ZTE.

Just today, a spokesman of MediaTek said that Taiwan's economic department had approved MediaTek to supply ZTE on the 4th of this month. The official of the economic department said that several other (Taiwan) manufacturers were also waiting for permission, but did not disclose the specific manufacturers.

At present, some of ZTE's smart phones use MediaTek processors, but this is only in the mid tier and entry-level products. The flagship smart phones are equipped with Qualcomm processors, and ZTE's operator network business is closely linked with American enterprises. Therefore, some analysts said that MediaTek's chip supply to ZTE is a good thing, but not good enough. The analyst further explained that MediaTek could not replace Qualcomm's 5G chip, and the mobile phone industry was about to usher in the 5G era. In order to solve such problems, ZTE has applied to the US Department of Commerce for suspension of the ban.
