On October 18, it was announced that Samsung Semiconductor had recently completed the verification of the 8nm LPP process, three hours ahead of schedule. Samsung said it would start mass production of 8nm chip products in the near future. Compared with the current 10nm process, the 8nm process can reduce the power consumption of the chip by 10%, while the chip area can be reduced by 10%.
Samsung said that the 8nm LPP process to be mass produced will be the most advanced process before 7nm is put into production. This process is based on the 10nm chip process technology with actual production experience, which can provide better performance and scalability than the current 10nm products. An analyst said that Samsung's 8nm LPP process will not only be used for Samsung and Qualcomm's ARM processor manufacturing, but also pave the way for the 7nm process. Although Samsung currently has the batch production capacity of 8nm LPP process, the output may not meet the demand of Qualcomm in the short term. Foreign media generally believe that Snapdragon 845 will still be manufactured using Samsung's 10nm process, and Snapdragon 855 will only use 8nm LPP process.
