Samsung will mass produce 10nm chips this year

Foreign media Re/code reported that Samsung recently met with chip manufacturers in Silicon Valley, Kelvin Low, senior executive of Samsung Semiconductor said Our 10nm process plan will be mass produced by the end of this year, claiming that the process can improve the performance of the chip by 10%.

In retrospect, Samsung has always been the chip provider of the iPhone, while TSMC received most orders for A8 processors (20nm, carried by iPhone 6/6Plus) in 2014. In this generation of iPhone 6s/6s Plus, Samsung and TSMC also compete with each other.

Although Samsung's 14nm FinFET process is numerically smaller than TSMC's 16nm FinFET, in actual testing, the A9 processor using Samsung's process consumes more energy than TSMC's OEM version, and the iPad Pro (A9X processor) released later is only TSMC's 16nm technology. Even recently, the industry reported that TSMC had obtained most orders for A10 chips. In order to recover from the decline, Samsung has not yet enjoyed the dividend after reducing the cost of the 14nm process. It seems that it will promote the 10nm process.

TSMC on the other side will fully produce 16nm chips in the second quarter of this year, but it will also mass produce 10nm processes in the second half of this year, and its 7nm process is expected to wait until the first half of 2018 before trial production.
