This year, the S7/S7 edge has returned to the multi version situation of the S5 era. The processors are divided into Snapdragon 820 and Exynos8890, and the CMOS has Sony IMX260 and ISOCELL. The huge differences in processor versions make people wonder whether Samsung will make another difference. Which version is stronger or weaker? What's the difference between the previous generation and iPhone?

Description and photo experience

Most of the national bank and Hong Kong S7/S7 edges using Snapdragon 820 use Sony's IMX260, while most of the Singapore S7/S7 edges using Exynos use ISOCELL (S5K2L1). The Galaxy S7 edge of the Bank of China version used in this test is Snapdragon 820+Sony IMX260, and the S7 edge of the Singapore version is Exynos 8890+ISOCELL.

They are all 12 megapixels, 1/2.5 inch, 1.4 μ M unit pixel size, both support dual pixel focusing system and optical anti shake, F1.7 aperture, 26mm equivalent focal length wide-angle lens, and the ISP is the same. The photographic experience of the two is almost the same. The differences in shutter response, focusing and imaging speed, HDR and night scene processing speed are all within one millisecond.

There is a special detail: in the actual production, the equivalent focal length of both machines is 26mm, while the equivalent focal length of the other national bank version S7 edge previously tested is 27mm. It is not determined whether the output of focal length value is affected after the OTA of the system, or whether the new machine has changed the lens module setting.

Except S6 edge+, which is 16 million pixels at 16:9, the rest are 12 million pixels at 4:3. Although the focal length and picture frame are different, the horizontal picture wide-angle of the two generations of Samsung flagship is relatively close, but the vertical expansion is very obvious, and the field of vision (wide-angle) is one circle larger than the iPhone.

The side effect of large wide-angle causes the objects in S7 edge to be "smaller" than iPhones with the same pixel, which has a certain impact on its discrimination.

The light metering of the two versions of S7 edge is very close in the daytime, but the light metering of the 260 version is brighter under the light and weak light In extremely weak light, they can make the night look like the day. They are pure blooded "Night vision device".

White balance: the white balance of version 260 has an overall blue bias The white balance of ISOCELL version is relatively more accurate, and the saturation is higher. The yellow green color is more colorful.


Discriminative power

Click the picture to view the large picture. In the daytime scenario, the four machines always maintain the minimum ISO. It is worth noting that the minimum ISO for iPhone is 25, the S7 edge for S6 edge+(IMX240) and ISOCELL is 40, and the S7 edge for IMX260 is only 50.

In terms of daytime discrimination, the algorithm of IMX260 version smears lighter, but sharpens more obviously, so the sharpness will be slightly stronger. However, neither version can be compared with the iPhone 6s Plus with the same pixel, and the S6 edge+with 16 million pixels is significantly different. In addition, in the scene with large light difference, the dark details of the IMX260 version, like S6 edge+, may appear a certain degree of color blocking.

Extremely weak light scene:

  • It's almost black to the naked eye Under extremely weak light, S7 edge can open the gap with other devices Even though ISO is the same, CMOS and A larger aperture can also bring higher picture brightness, and this year Samsung finally offered a 1/4 second super slow shutter/multi frame synthesis at the same level as the iPhone.

  • The extremely weak light brightness of the final film can be called abnormal, and it is a well deserved night vision instrument. Of course, the price is that the noise will be more obvious, but you can really see the details that other machines can't capture. However, the probability of using this scenario is not high.

  • among, The IMX260 version is characterized by higher brightness, but less smearing and more noise Compared with "highlights", details may be lost due to brightness improvement, but less smearing brings stronger discrimination.

  • The image brightness of the ISOCELL version is relatively low, but it is still much higher than that seen by the naked eye. The smearing is more obvious. In large areas such as the sky and the outer wall of the building, it can even wipe out all the noise, but it also sacrifices some of the discrimination.

In general, the gap between two CMOS versions of S7 edge is much smaller than that between processors. Compared with the difference of versions, we should be more worried about the obvious retrogression of discrimination between this generation and the previous generation.
