Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 801, as the mainstream SoC of high-end mobile phones, are supported by most mobile phone manufacturers. But Snapdragon 800 and 801 are just a series name. There are many models of processors under Snapdragon 800 and 801. I believe we hear more about MSM8974 and MSM8974AB. How are their specific models and series divided?
First, let's look at Anandtech's classification of Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 801 ?
This table seems to have many doubts. Let's divide Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 801 into two categories:
Snapdragon 800 (SoC version V2) has MSM8974VV MSM8974AA?MSM8974AB
Snapdragon 801 (SoC version V3) has MSM8974AA MSM8974AB?MSM8974AC
Note: Only "9" is considered here. In fact, there are MSM8274XX, MSM8674XX and other models due to different basebands.
From the perspective of CPU main frequency, from the lowest 2.2GHz, the middle 2.3GHz, to the highest 2.5GHz (specifically 2150MHz, 2265MHz and 2450MHz), this frequency is extremely high compared with other processors. The GPUs of the six SoCs are all Adreno 330, with frequencies of 450MHz, 550MHz and 578MHz. There are two types of ISP: 320MHz and 465MHz. Memory frequencies are 800MHz and 933MHz. Compared with the Snapdragon 800, the Snapdragon 801 series has added support for eMMC5.0 and DSDA (dual sim, dual active, that is, dual cards and dual standby).

In the past, we collectively referred to these models of processors as Snapdragon 800, and we know that there will be "AB", "AC" and other versions in detail. However, Qualcomm announced the "new" SoC series Snapdragon 801 in MWC2014, and Sony Xperia Z2 took the lead in using the Snapdragon 801 2.3GHz processor. The chip used by Samsung when it released the Galaxy S5 is considered to be "Snapdragon 800 2.5GHz", which seems to have a higher frequency than Xperia Z2, but the series name is not so arrogant. What is the actual situation?

It is estimated that everyone has begun to feel dizzy. There are MSM8974AA and MSM8974AB in the Snapdragon 800 and Snapdragon 801 series. Isn't this a trick? Let's introduce one by one:
Snapdragon 800
MSM8974VV
This is the lowest frequency model in the Snapdragon 800 series. The CPU frequency is 2150MHz, the GPU frequency is 450MHz, the ISP frequency is 320MHz, and the memory frequency is 800MHz. This chip is also used by many products, For example, Xperia Z1, nubia Z5S, Kindle Fire HD and other devices use it.

Screenshot of nubia Z5S, this is the built-in application "cowboy electrician". It can be seen that it uses MSM8974VV, CPU frequency 2150MHz, GPU frequency 450MHz ?

MSM8974AA (Version V2)
This is also a common Snapdragon 800 model. The CPU frequency is 2265MHz, the GPU frequency is 450MHz, the ISP frequency is 320MHz, and the memory frequency is 800MHz. Only the CPU frequency is different from the MSM8974VV. It is mainly used by Samsung, LG and Fantai, the "Three Heavens King" of South Korea, such as the famous Galaxy Note 3, Nexus 5, LG G2 and other products.

For the curve of Nexus 5 when running rabbit, please note that CPU0 (yellow line) can reach the maximum frequency of 2265MHz ?

Nexus 5 Run the game frequency curve, pay attention to the GPU frequency (yellow line), up to 450MHz ?

MSM8974AB (Version V2)
We are familiar with the name of MSM8974AB. The parameters of the V2 version of MSM8974AB are: the CPU frequency is 2265MHz, the GPU frequency is 550MHz, the ISP frequency is 320MHz, and the memory frequency is 933MHz. Let's first take a look at a slide ? at Xiaomi 3's press conference
It can be seen that the parameters of the "8974AB" on the Xiaomi 3 launch conference are relatively close to those of the V2 version, but the ISP frequency of the V2 version is 320 MHz, while the 8974AB on the Xiaomi 3 launch conference is 465 MHz, so it is obvious that these two chips are not the same chip. It is estimated that Qualcomm gave the parameters to Xiaomi at that time incorrectly.

The "550MHz Adreno 330" has also been hyped by Xiaomi, vivo and other manufacturers as well as the vast media. In fact, the GPU frequency of the MSM8974AB we really got is 578MHz (the V3 version mentioned below) ?

Snapdragon 801
MSM8974AA (V3 version)
The appearance of this version is somewhat baffling. There is no difference in frequency between this version and the V2 version of MSM8974AA. Of course, we have never seen the emergence of products using it.
MSM8974AB (V3 version)
This SoC is a relatively "standard" Snapdragon 801. The CPU frequency is 2265MHz, the GPU frequency is 578MHz, the ISP frequency is 465MHz, and the memory frequency is 933MHz. The first device to use Snapdragon 801 as a publicity device is Xperia Z2. In fact, before that, Xplay3S and Xiaomi 3 Unicom version (Telecom version) have used this series of products. The author has handled five Xplay3S (including the engineering machine at the press conference) and two Xiaomi 3 Unicom versions. The GPU frequency is 578MHz, which already belongs to the V3 version of MSM8X74AB. This makes people doubt whether the V2 version with the legendary 550MHz GPU frequency really exists. Due to the increase of memory frequency, the bandwidth of the V3 version MSM8974AB has reached 14.9GBps (the memory bandwidth at 800MHz is 12.8GBps), which will better support high-resolution screens.
Currently known products using the V3 version of MSM8X74AB include Xperia Z2, Xiaomi 3 Unicom and Telecom versions, and Xplay3S.
The screenshot of Xiaomi 3 Unicom version (MSM8274AB) running a large game shows that the CPU frequency on the monitor reaches 2.3GHz, and the GPU frequency reaches 578MHz ?

MSM8974AC
This is the top model of Snapdragon 801, with the highest frequency. Compared with MSM8974AB, the main improvement is the CPU frequency. Parameters: CPU main frequency 2450MHz, GPU frequency 578MHz, ISP frequency 465MHz, memory frequency 933MHz. The first time I heard that this model was Jinli E7. Before the press conference, Lu Weibing, president of Jinli, announced on his microblog that E7 would use SoC with the model of MSM8974AC. Later, the E7 displayed at the press conference only used MSM8974VV 2.2GHz, while the real use of MSM8974AC was the subsequent LTE version.

We know that the products using MSM8974AC include Samsung's new flagship Galaxy S5 and Jinli E7 LTE.

From the above, MSM8974VV, MSM8974AA (V2), MSM8974AB (V3), and MSM8974AC have been applied to different devices. However, whether the MSM8974AB (V2) and MSM8974AA (V3) really exist is a question mark. For the products on sale, those using MSM8974 2150MHz and 2265MHz belong to Snapdragon 800, while those using MSM8974AB and MSM8974AC belong to Snapdragon 801. Snapdragon 801 has higher CPU, GPU, ISP and memory frequencies than Snapdragon 800, and also supports more advanced eMMC standards and dual card dual standby.
