Who is the real hard core? Exynos 7420 VS Snapdragon 810 Performance Duel
Who is the real hard core? Exynos 7420 VS Snapdragon 810 Performance Duel

In the field of mobile processors, Samsung and Qualcomm have always been in a tight competition in terms of the strongest SoC. In the era of Cortex-A57, Qualcomm has also abandoned its own Krait architecture and turned to the public version. What is the strength of the Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810, both 8-core 64 bit?

First, let's compare the parameters of the two SoCs in this contest:

From the perspective of CPU and memory, the specifications of Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810 are very similar. However, Exynos 7420 has a huge advantage that it uses its own 14nm FinFET process, which has a great advantage in the process. In terms of GPU, Qualcomm and Samsung have both used the "ancestral" Adreno and Mali series. Of course, the specifications will be improved compared with the past. The Exynos 7420 uses the eight core Mali-T760mp8. Advanced technology enables Samsung to "stack" on it, and the frequency is up to 766MHz, which is almost unimaginable for the past 20nm processors. The Snapdragon 810 uses its own high-end Adreno 430. The summary is that the architecture is advanced and the performance is powerful.

Next is the theoretical performance comparison. We use the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge (Exynos 7420) and LG G Flex 2 (MSM8994, or Snapdragon 810) as the comparison objects, and combine the performance of mainstream high-end mobile phones as a reference.

CPU performance comparison

Pi:

Pi mainly tests the single core performance of the CPU. The result is not unexpected. The Galaxy S6 edge using the Exynos 7420 is eye-catching, while the G Flex 2's performance is only equal to that of the Snapdragon 801's mobile phone. It seems that there was frequency reduction during the test.

RAR performance test

The RAR performance test mainly tests the performance of the CPU L2 cache. In addition, multithreaded CPUs will have great advantages in this test. In contrast, Exynos 7420 is still strong, while Snapdragon 810 has a high score, but it still lags behind Exynos 7420.

Sunspider 1.0.2

Sunspider is also a test to test the single core performance of CPU. Here, Android phones are tested with Chrome, while iPhone 6 Plus uses its own Safari. The Exynos 7420 still has great advantages in the Android camp, and the Snapdragon 810 also performs well, but it is slightly worse than the Galaxy Note 4 using Exynos 5433.

Geekbench 3 single core test

As the name implies, this is also a test of the CPU single core performance. The Exynos 7420 still has a huge advantage over the Snapdragon 810, but the latter is already very powerful compared with other Android phone SoCs. But the more powerful one is the improved Swift architecture of Apple A8. The single core performance makes Android phones ashamed.

Geekbench 3 multi-core test

The A8, which performed extremely well in the single core test, was finally pulled down because only the dual core processor was replaced by various eight core processors, of which the Exynos 7420 still had the strongest performance. The LeEco super phone 1 using MT6795 also had a fairly strong multi-threaded performance, while the Snapdragon 810 on G Flex 2 surprised people, which was caused by the frequency reduction phenomenon during the test.

GFXBench Tyrannosaurus Rex scene (Offscreen, 1080P)

In the special test of OpenGL ES2.0, the Mali-T760mp8 on the Exynos 7420 achieved good results through multi-core and high-frequency dual stacking. Mali, who had been pressed by Adreno in the past, finally pulled back in this test. The Adreno 430 on Snapdragon 810 is very powerful compared with the GPU of other mobile phones, and its absolute performance is better than the GX6450 of iPhone 6 Plus. However, the current large-scale games have not yet transitioned to OpenGL ES3.0 or even 3.1, so the performance of this test is relatively referential for game performance.

GFXBench Manhattan scene (Offscreen, 1080P)

In the special test of OpenGL ES3.0, the overall result is very similar to that of Tyrannosaurus Rex. The Exynos 7420 still shows strong performance. Snapdragon 810 is superior to Apple A8 and Snapdragon 805 at the same level.

From the above comparison, this competition between Exynos 7420 and Xiaolong 810 is basically a competition of performance compaction, and there is little suspense. Seen from the actual situation, the frequency reduction problem of Snapdragon 810 is also quite serious. Of course, we believe that this problem can be improved by upgrading the driver and kernel. In terms of game performance, due to the resolution, we will conduct more detailed comparison and testing of games and practical applications after we get the top configuration of Xiaomi Note with 2K screen+Snapdragon 810.
