The popularity of tablets has made Microsoft start to worry about the erosion of its entrenched market by tablets. After several years of gestation and research and development, Win8 system and Surface RT tablet were born. However, Surface RT also has a fatal weakness - it cannot run a large number of existing Windows applications. Microsoft has also made great efforts to explain the difference between Windows RT and Windows 8 to consumers. However, it seems difficult for ordinary consumers to clarify the relationship between the two, so Samsung simply gave up the listing of ATIV Tab in the United States.
However, this tablet is still available in other countries. We finally got one through other channels. After using the evaluation, we came to the conclusion that the ATIV Tab is much better than the Surface RT!
hardware design

If you have ever played Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 or Galaxy Note 10.1, congratulations. You can almost skip the appearance. The ATIV Tab is almost the same as Samsung's ten inch tablet. Samsung still maintains its own design style. That is to say, the machine is still a plastic shell, which makes people look metallic through polishing. Although it is a bit cheap, it has better ability to resist falling injuries and scratches.

There is a 1.9 million pixel front camera on the top of the front, and an entity home button of the Windows RT system is located in the center below the screen. Continuing the high-quality speaker design of the flat panel, the stereo speakers are placed on both sides of the front of the body, and the metal grid of the speakers makes people feel very good. There are 3.5mm headphone jack, power key, volume key, microSD card slot, micro HDMI and USB 2.0 port on the top. There are no buttons on both sides of the fuselage, which gives a very concise and refined feeling. There are power connectors, chassis connectors and connectors specially prepared for the keyboard on the bottom border.

In terms of internal configuration, it is equipped with a 1.5GHz Qualcomm dual core Snapdragon S4 APQ8060A (it will be mentioned below that the endurance performance is better than that of the Surface RT, and it is speculated that it should be the difference between the 28nm process and the 45nm processor), the Adreno 225 image processor and 2GB RAM. The same configuration can be found in the Lenovo Idea Tab S220 and Dell XPS 10. The 32GB internal storage capacity does not have the 16GB version, mainly because the Microsoft Windows RT system will account for 11GB, so it is obvious that the 32GB internal storage space is too small and insufficient.
After careful evaluation of the hardware design, we believe that Samsung has still made great efforts in quality, and designed and produced the ATIV Tab at the highest level. We twist and press the machine by hand (mild violence test), and there is no plastic creaking sound. The workmanship is very good. The machine is directly stuffed into the bag without a protective sleeve. When needed, it is picked up and reused without any scratch. This is suitable for the office function of the ATIV Tab. The three-dimensional dimension is 265.8mm * 168.1mm * 7mm, and the weight is 570g. Compared with 680g of Surface RT, it is thinner and more compact. After all, Samsung has always been designing and manufacturing hardware, and it is not difficult to have advantages in this respect.
Screen and external sound effect
Microsoft has limited the resolution of the first generation Windows RT tablet to 1366 * 768. For the top Android 1920 * 1200 resolution and iPad 2560 * 1600 resolution, it is a bit shabby. However, the reality is that as long as you don't watch the screen closely, the difference is not obvious, plus Microsoft's font processing technology, it is still very clear when displaying fonts.
Due to the winter season, the sun is not strong when testing the screen outdoors, so the screen display can be observed from a larger angle. In addition, since ATIV Tab does not have its own pop-up bracket like Microsoft Surface, if you want to use this tablet to watch movies, we suggest you buy a base. It is tiring to watch movies with the tablet in your hands all the time. With the support and the Surface RT together, the brightness is adjusted to the highest. It can be observed that the backlight brightness of the ATIV S is higher than that of the Sluface.
The speakers on both sides of the fuselage perform well, and the bass is also good. The sound is also very loud at the maximum volume. In the unscientific test, we put the machine in an empty room, closed the door, and turned the sound to the maximum to play music. The sound of the speaker is clear and crisp. That is to say, imagine that if you open a small party at home, the machine can act as a small speaker.
Performance and battery life

If you have never used Windows 8 or Windows RT, especially from Android and iOS devices, you can immediately realize that Windows RT is different from the previous two in system response. For example, when you turn the tablet 90 degrees from horizontal to vertical, the content displayed on the screen will not only turn 90 degrees, but will shrink first and then Now let's see the 90 degree transition animation. This situation also occurred several times on the ATIV Tab.

Similar situations also include APP loading speed. If you are used to the situation of instant loading after clicking, the average loading speed of Windows RT system in 5 seconds will make you a little uncomfortable. For example, after opening the video player and clicking the tile, the red background appears, and several points around the central picture begin to rotate around the picture, indicating that the APP is loading. However, when the APP is fully loaded and running, it will be smooth without jamming. Even if you switch and slide between several APPs, the response speed of the software is very fast, and you rarely see jamming.
In our power consumption test, we played the movie in cycles and turned on wifi. The brightness was turned on to 50%. The ATIV Tab can last 12 hours and 30 minutes, breaking the record of similar tests of addictive technology. Before that, Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7.7 also scored 12 hours and 1 minute.
Software
Windows RT was released on October 26. In order to compete with Android and iOS, Windows RT is a system designed based on ARM processors. As early as October, when we evaluated Windows 8, we also found that Microsoft encountered a dilemma in this regard, that is, Windows 8 and Windows RT are the same in appearance, UI and operation mode, and consumers may confuse the two. This may also be the reason why Samsung canceled the launch of the ATIV Tab in the United States. Although RT has a desktop mode, Windows RT is not compatible with x86 processor software. It's really hard for ordinary consumers to explain.
There are still problems in video playback. The video file format we tested is. mp4, and we encountered a lot of frame dropping and decoding problems.
Word Excel、PowerPoint、OneNote， Although some modifications have been made to fit the RT system. Unfortunately, the optimization of these office software for touch screen is not enough. Maybe Microsoft also considered this problem, so it left a USB port to connect some external devices. When the mouse is connected, these software can be operated easily.
In addition, the app store of Windows RT is still insufficient in social applications. In addition, People Hub is not good enough. For example, Twitter and Facebook are still lack of official applications. Although there are some applications to replace them, they are all a little inferior. These applications only present content by converting mobile Twitter pages. Other commonly used software, such as Instagram, Spotify, NPR and Dropbox, are still unavailable (social applications are scarce abroad, and even worse in China).

The effect of the 5 megapixel rear camera of the ATIV Tab barely passed. We took some winter scenes, and the pictures were colored. There is also some whiteness and faintness. The built-in camera software lacks the touch focusing function, and there is no optional filter. However, Samsung has provided its own image processing tool to add some filters to the captured images. In the camera APP provided by Samsung, there are settings such as white balance, as well as normal and macro shooting modes.

Samsung ATIV Tab has the advantages of lighter, thinner and better grip than Microsoft Surface RT. In addition, the battery life is also better than that of Surface RT. It can also become a good production tool after connecting the mouse and keyboard. In terms of defects, Microsoft Windows RT system is more common, for example, the application is not rich enough.
