Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 released: 35% increase in super core and 25% increase in GPU
Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 released: 35% increase in super core and 25% increase in GPU

On November 16, Qualcomm officially released the second generation Snapdragon 8 (hereinafter referred to as Snapdragon 8 Gen 2). This time, the CPU uses the new 1+2+2+3 architecture, which improves the performance of the super core by 35% and the Adreno 740 GPU by 25%. Except that Xiaomi was the first to carry it, vivo、OPPO、moto, Even Meizu said it was the first to carry it.

TSMC N4 process, compared with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, the super core performance is increased by 35%, and the energy efficiency is increased by 40%

  • Super core X3 3.2GHz

  • Large core 2xA715 2.8GHz

  • Large core 2xA710 2.8GHz

  • Small core 3xA510 Refreshed 2.0GHz

Adreno 740, Performance increased by 25% and energy efficiency increased by 45%. It has hardware ray tracing, Vulkan 1.3, AV1 decoding, and supports 8K 60fps HDR video playback.

Support LPDDR5x 8400Mbps memory+UFS 4.0 flash memory

In order to be compatible with 32-bit applications, Qualcomm not only uses A510 Refreshed, but also brings two "mopping bottles" A710. It really made me cry to death.

Peripheral part

  • X70 5G baseband (modem), peak 10Gbps download, 3.5 Gbps upload. The domestic Sub-6 5G supports 4x4 MIMO, while the overseas millimeter wave supports 8-carrier aggregation and 2x2 MIMO.

  • FastConnect 7800, WiFi 7 with peak value of 5.8Gbps (6GHz band), Bluetooth 5.3 LE Audio、 Snapdragon with dual Bluetooth and spatial audio can listen freely (48kHz music streaming and 48ms delay)

  • The new "cognitive ISP" has the capability of real-time image semantic segmentation. A single camera can support up to 200 million pixels, up to 8K 30fps and 4K 120fps video recording. The first release supports Sony's QDOL4 (four exposure digital overlapping HDR), and the corresponding CMOS is IMX800 and IMX989.

  • Snapdragon Smart (the new Qualcomm AI engine) improved its AI performance by 435%. It is the first Snapdragon SoC that supports INT4 AI precision, and its AI reasoning energy efficiency per watt increased by 60%.

The mass production opportunity of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be launched at the end of 2022. After the press conference, a number of mobile phone manufacturers announced that they would be the first/first to launch the second generation Snapdragon 8. Including vivo X90 series, iQOO 11 series, Xiaomi 13 series, Redmi K60 series moto X40、 ZTE Axon 50 series, Nubia Z50 Pro, Red Devil 8 Pro, ASUS ROG, Glory, OPPO Find X6 series, One Plus 11, Sharp, Sony.

The most unexpected one is the Star Age/Meizu (lucky you are too charming). Meizu's new flagship has finally broken through the PPT and voting stages, and will also be the first model equipped with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Scores of Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 ↑

Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 uses the same 4nm process as Snapdragon 8+, while MediaTek's 9200 is the N4P process.

Because the official PPT also compares Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, it is inevitable that Snapdragon 8+and Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will be compared together:

  • Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 super core performance increased by 35% and energy efficiency increased by 40%; GPU increased by 25%, energy efficiency increased by 45%

  • Snapdragon 8+increases CPU by 10% and reduces power consumption by up to 30%; The GPU frequency is increased by 10%, and the power consumption is reduced by up to 30%; The overall power consumption of SoC is reduced by 15%.

Tianji 9200

Compared with the divulged score of vivo X90 Pro+GeekBench, the single core multi-core gap between Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Tianji 9200 is 4% and 6% respectively, which is less than expected:

  • Vivo X90 Pro+single core multi core score is 1485 and 4739 respectively

  • Samsung's previous best performance was the Galaxy S23+, single core multi-core 1485 and 4844

  • Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is 1521/4689

  • Galaxy S23 is 1524/4597

This year, both Qualcomm and MediaTek have not seen much improvement in CPU (Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 has a small core replaced by a large core, but the improvement is less than expected), and the GPU has increased significantly. At present, the power consumption is still unknown, but it should be far better than Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.
