OPPO officially released its annual flagship OPPO Find X5 series on February 24. The Find X5 Pro replaced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and the self developed Mariana X NPU. It added dual OIS, increased batteries, enhanced heat dissipation and charging. It is now the only IP68 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 flagship in China, priced from 5999 yuan.

This is a machine that performs normally but is very interesting in concept and technology, so the evaluation structure will be a little different from usual.

The positioning of the Find X5 is very open. Although it is a Snapdragon 888+dual IMX766 like the Find X3 Pro, the screen size and specification (mainly it), battery, wireless charge, main camera and ultra wide-angle lens module are weaker than the Find X5 Pro, starting at 3999 yuan.

While the Find X5 Pro Tianji version, which has been guarded by the aircraft circle for a long time, lacks Mariana X and sensor displacement anti shake (with normal OIS), and the screen is LTPO 1.0 (it should also be too late for software tuning). It is only 12+256 version, at 5799 yuan. It was booked on March 14 and sold on March 18.

The fuselage layout is almost the same as that of the previous generation. The middle frame is slightly higher than the front and rear glass in the pursuit of a mellow feel, and the transition is natural. The large angle of the ceramic itself will have the unique light mirror effect of the ceramic, and it also matches the color of the middle frame very well. After all, it is not AG glass. The light and shadow effect of the "crater" camera matrix is most obvious on the black version. Light and shadow vary from different angles. The screen hardware and LTPO strategy are the same as that of One Plus 10 Pro. The minimum refresh rate is 1Hz when the high brightness is still (the daily brightness is more 5Hz and 10Hz), and 120Hz can be bounced at the moment of touch. It is the most intelligent and effective solution of LTPO in the Android camp for the time being, and the App lock frame status is relatively good. 100nit screen test shows that the Find X5 Pro is the flagship of the green factory and dominates the list every day. The hardware, brightness, uniformity, etc. are close to the real GT2 Pro and One Plus 10 Pro (there are 30 minute screen lighting options). Although the color accuracy in the default vivid mode is slightly weaker, the factory color calibration of the Find X5 Pro is stronger. The color accuracy in the natural mode and professional cinema mode is equal to and new to the historical record respectively. The "color correction for 100 nits and 500 nits" publicized by the official is effective.

 

In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 has nothing to say. The single CPU core of the Find X5 Pro can be opened, the GPU is normal, the multi-core is obviously conservative, and the flash memory read and write performance is general (especially the random write performance that has a significant impact on flow smoothness).


The Find X5 Pro with 5000mAh battery has a significantly better endurance than the previous generation, but it lags behind the OnePlus 10 Pro and the Genuine GT2 Pro with similar hardware. In GPUGFLOPS, the static power consumption of the Find X5 Pro and the One Plus 10 Pro is very close, and the endurance gap may be related to the relatively more active core scheduling of the Find X5 Pro.

 

Find X5 Pro has a peak charge of 64.8W, lasting for 40 seconds; Then 62W, 58W and 53W three steps; The charge is cut off for 38 minutes. The peak value and duration of the 80W fast charge are obviously short, just a little ahead of the 65W fast charge, with a slight increase. I really don't know whether I should blame my 65W for being too strong or too little toothpaste.


The Find X5 Pro and the One Plus 10 Pro are both 80W fast charging, and both are family standard 5000mAh dual cells. What is more advanced than its peers is its life span. Find X5 Pro claims that it has extended the lithium ion activity. After 1600 cycles, the health degree is more than 80%, and the 4-year loss is less than 20%.

Maybe to protect the battery, the total charging time of the Find X5 Pro increases. Although the total charging time is up to 35 minutes, which is slower than the 65W Genuine GT2 Pro, in fact, in the first 50% (11 minutes), the Find X5 Pro is actually faster than one plus, but the power slows down faster in the later period.

  • Long focus: Only the Find X5 Pro and X70 Pro+have optical 2x telephoto, and the other two are for main camera trimming. OPPO's performance was slightly better than expected, and its limit discrimination was good. The X70 Pro+, the strongest 2x focus, has weak ultimate discrimination, but the dark scene is really strong. The Find X5 Pro only has a 2x telephoto, which is 3.3x with 10 Pro, and the X70 Pro+and Xiaomi 11 Ultra both have a 5x telephoto. The difference of 5x zoom is too large, so we won't comment on it at a glance.

  • Ultra wide angle: The field of vision of OPPO and OnePlus is about 110 degrees, less than X70 Pro+, and far less than Xiaomi 11 Ultra (the largest ultra wide angle after all). However, the sensor is far from perfect. The Find X5 Pro has the advantage of rolling in terms of photographic experience and details, which is second only to the ultra long focus.

  • Main camera: The green factory finally has the ability to suppress highlights, even the ultra micro 11 Ultra (the IMX766 ultra wide angle of the same CMOS can't suppress highlights sometimes, I hope OTA can do it). The white balance has a red and warm tone, and there is no problem overall. The focal section is obviously 23-25mm longer than the mainstream, and the viewing angle is slightly narrow, but the discrimination is beneficial. One plus CMOS is bigger, but it is also left half way behind. The Find X5 Pro can even compete with Xiaomi 11 Ultra and X70 Pro+from time to time.

The main camera of the Find X5 Pro is obviously better than that of the conventional IMX766. Its biggest advantages are its discrimination and photographic experience, especially the night scene imaging speed. Although the continuous shooting is also as "sandwiched" as the iPhone, and more serious than the normal model (several frames will be mixed during the continuous shooting). The weak point is the dark detail of the extremely weak light scene, but those who can win it are already monster level. Super wide angle still has no rivals, and telephoto is still a pain forever. In addition, I also miss the microscopes taken last year.

This part is the science popularization and discussion of "Mariana X and Dual OIS", which does not affect the product evaluation. Interested users can directly jump to the final conclusion. Although I paid a lot of respect to OPPO's efforts, I didn't have enough food to eat.

About NPU (Mariana X)

OPPO said that during the development of the Find X5 series, there were nearly 2000 people related to imaging. OPPO announced that the One Plus imaging team was also helping after the One Plus 10 Pro was launched. The key point is the debugging of Mariana X and dual OIS. These two efforts are not easy to present on paper. OPPO has indeed chosen a more difficult path.

NPU is a black box. We can only see some information from the samples and interviews.

  • Mariana MariSilicon X is a special image NPU, TSMC 6nm process, 11.6TOPS/W, 18TOPS computing power (peak value 1.55W?), with its own ISP and memory subsystem, which is used to realize 20bit HDR, 4K 30fps AI night scene video and other functions.

  • Reasonably, TSMC 6nm is more advanced than Samsung 5nm, and its energy efficiency may even be higher than Samsung 4nm. Inadvertently, the process of NPU may be more advanced than that of SoC, Surprise!

Mariana X is prior to Qualcomm's ISP and is exposed to the original RAW data output by CMOS. In this step, NPU's own computing power is used to do AI noise reduction HDR。 Also ahead of Qualcomm ISP is OPPO's own 3A algorithm (focusing, exposure, white balance). Both the chip and the algorithm are their own, so algorithm accumulation can be done here, and it is convenient to migrate to other platforms in the future.

A few years later, The second generation of Mariana X comes out, and the first generation of Mariana X may be placed in the mid tier model As it happens, the latter's SoC is often weak in ISP and AI performance, which will enable these models to achieve superior camera performance.

OPPO said that the energy efficiency ratio of Mariana X running photography algorithm will be 50% higher than Qualcomm. The most direct effect is that OPPO Find X5 can run more large and complex algorithms. In addition, NPU is used to enhance the video preview stream, so that third-party video capture tools such as WeChat, dithering, and fast hand can have better image quality. Yes, these third-party apps are actually using preview images to output videos. Thanks to Zhang Xiaoshe's negative optimization on the Android platform, the video effect of Android is still far from that of iPhone.

OPPO said that Mariana X's ability only played 30%, and will continue to optimize OTA in the future. It is true that there is still much room for improvement in the Find X5. For example, the beauty and virtualization mode in the video is still only 1080P (can wait for OTA optimization), while the video AI mode is only 4K 30FPS (should not be optimized upward). The main bottleneck here is the performance and power consumption of CMOS, The 4K 60FPS HDR or night scene requires dual frame synthesis, which means that CMOS has the ability to output 4K 120FPS, but the IMX766 "I can't do it".


About Dual OIS

OPPO's dual OIS claims that the module has 2.2 times the volume, 4 times the amount of light input, and 3 times the anti shake performance, which can achieve "plus or minus 3 degrees of anti shake and plus or minus 0.7 degrees of rotation" anti shake, and the safety shutter is extended from 1/8 seconds to 1/2 seconds (as a reference, vivo's micro PTZ is also plus or minus 3 degrees, 3 times the anti shake performance, and the 1/2 second shutter film rate is 64%). In terms of the anti shake capability of the official announcement, OPPO's "dual OIS" is based on vivo's micro platform.

Structurally, it is the traditional camera anti shake+the SMA anti shake on the sensor. The latter is a shape memory alloy suspension wire pull sensor (similar SMA motors are used in many machines such as iPhone, Huawei P30 Pro/Mate30 Pro, Meizu 18 Pro, etc.

In fact, the five axis anti shake on the camera is decomposed into three categories: translation, swing and rotation, corresponding to the so-called "XY axis, RollL, Pitch and Yaw"

  1. Horizontal and vertical displacement (XY axis translation): If the two axes shake at the same time, it really needs the assistance of the sensor displacement anti shake, which can be prevented by OPPO dual OIS, but the micro PTZ can not be determined;

  2. rotate (Roll), That is, jitter rotating around the center of the sensor: sensor displacement anti jitter can make CMOS rotate, and it is also OPPO's dual OIS anti jitter (although only positive or negative 0.7 degrees), but the micro PTZ can't fix it;

  3. Pitch swing and left and right swing (Pitch and Yaw), that is, rotate up and down and left and right around the center of the sensor. They will produce the effect of "the center is not pasted, but the edge is pasted". Handling these two jitters is the strength of the micro PTZ.

Dual OIS, let The area of this module is the same as that of Xiaomi 11 Ultra GN2 (Of course, much thinner). OPPO even has a thickness margin. It has equipped the IMX766 with a lens with a longer focal length, making the physical focal length of the IMX766 close to that of the IMX689 (5.97mm vs. 6.06mm). by the way, OPPO also said that it did not intend to brush the CMOS size before fully digging the 1/1.56 inch sensor.

How about the effect?

From the comparison of the above samples, the effect of dual OIS is hidden in the difference between Mariana X and the algorithm. And OPPO did not give too many opportunities to the dual OIS to take photos:

  • OPPO Find X5 is similar to the Xiaomi 12 series, which controls the shutter speed for film rate and capture speed , the shutter speed of most scenes is faster than that of Xiaomi vivo、 One plus faster The slow shutter time of the dual OIS has not been used up. At this stage, it is mainly to improve the success rate of multi frame synthesis (improve the slice rate).

  • Even in extremely low light night scenes, the imaging speed of OPPO Find X5 is unbelievable. When flagship brands such as Xiaomi 11 Ultra and vivo X70 Pro+need 2-3 seconds of super night scenes, the Find X5 Pro is generally finished in less than 1 second (iPhone super night scenes are not so radical).

Now, on the contrary, OPPO has chosen the latter option between "super bottom" and "super bottom+mechanical anti shake" (OPPO/Find is really a mechanical structure enthusiast) . Reasonably, a 1/1.56 inch CMOS with dual OSI or micro PTZ can indeed be considered a flagship product, but it is certainly not as exaggerated as "equivalent to 1 inch" at the communication meeting.

Compared with "large pixel short shutter" and "small pixel long shutter", no matter how strong anti shake is, you are using long shutter to change the effect, and long shutter is bound to lose the capture ability, but large pixels can always output full blood. In most cases, ordinary OIS is also sufficient. Although the double OIS leaves infinite possibilities for computational photography, it still cannot win the simple and rough bottom at this stage.

In fact, the cost of OPPO Mariana X+dual OIS (plus R&D costs) is not lower than GN2. OPPO and Xiaomi diverged on the form of "sparing no cost".

About telephoto

When castrating a telephoto lens, manufacturers always mention "low utilization rate". However, the usage rate of the lens is not directly related to its importance. You may only use the ultra long focus lens several times a week, but the notes in class and the distant scenery may be of great significance. Users who value taking photos are often more willing and able to explore the telephoto lens.

The bad news is that OPPO generation has no telephoto; The good news is that OPPO has made it clear that the next generation will have high-quality telephoto.


OPPO said that Mariana X's ability has only played 30%, and will continue to optimize OTA in the future. The verification method is also very simple A few months later, compare the old and new firmware versions of Find X5. It will be decided whether to paint a cake or work.


Conclusion: There is a lot of effort behind, but it is really expensive

Although it is 700 yuan lower than the matched Find X2 Pro, the Find X5 Pro is still 500 yuan more expensive than the previous generation. This is the price difference of ceramic back cover, Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Mariana X and dual OIS. As for the Tianji version that was expected by all, people initially thought that OPPO would make MediaTek stand at 4000 yuan. As a result, OPPO only made the high configuration version of 12+256, making Fage stand at 5799 yuan (senior executives of MediaTek may be overjoyed). High EQ: wasn't Huawei always overpriced? Isn't it also high-end?

In brief, F The ind X5 Pro has an excellent screen, and its performance/endurance/charging is the normal level of this generation of flagship. The main camera uses different routes to achieve the true flagship level, and the ultra wide-angle is the only way to defeat, but there is still no true telephoto. If there is an ordinary periscope telephoto, the reaction of netizens will not be so fierce. However, compared with competing products, the price of Find X5 Pro is one segment higher.

The Find X5 Pro does have a travel dissimilation. It has the only IP68 in the domestic Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a super wide angle and the texture of a ceramic back cover. It's a bit like the price discrimination in the air ticket/high-speed rail ticket: you said that there was no difference, it was really more comfortable in the first class; You can say that there are differences. They are all the same aircraft, and the functions of different classes are the same. Users who are sensitive to differences need to pay disproportionate prices, but they do not have much choice. But it is a green factory after all, so we can only expect its price performance in the shopping festival.

From the industry level, Mariana X is the most powerful self-developed chip of domestic mobile phone manufacturers except Kirin. The self research cost and calibration time of the chip will not take effect so quickly, but if you can use the IMX766 and catch up with other top flagship, you have reached the strategic goal.

OPPO's "Double OIS and Mariana X" is more technical, more interesting and more promising than hard connection. These efforts are not easy to show on paper. Even this "small bottom" has done so much "fancy", and the result is only equal. But the reverse logic is the same as Apple's "leave one hand behind": when Apple/OPPO uses a super bottom, can peers pile up larger CMOS at this time?

Compared with the domestic early "assembly plant" model, this effort deserves support and understanding. Semiconductor is an industry that needs national strength to support itself. Many self research and innovation are also anti capital logic. It takes a lot of trouble to get even with the assembly plant, and the cost is higher than that of the assembly plant. Everyone will fall into philosophical meditation.

However, they didn't care at the initial stage. Later, they got stuck (Huawei's dilemma and the Russian Ukrainian conflict tell us that benevolence and morality are on the lips, but the bottom decides the head, and everything has its own borders). When monopoly manufacturers (Qualcomm! Not just you) fail, they will blame the manufacturers for not doing their own research. This is not like not letting you fall in love when you are studying, Do you want to find your girlfriend's parents to marry immediately after graduation? This is the main reason why I am tolerant of Find X5 pricing.
