Qualcomm Announces Snapdragon Brand Independence: Will Change the Product Naming System

On November 23, Qualcomm officially announced that its Snapdragon will become an independent product brand in the future and will adopt a simplified and consistent product naming system. The name of Snapdragon mobile platform will be a digit plus intergenerational number. This naming rule will be started on the new generation flagship mobile platform, and the gold logo will continue to be used on top products.

That is to say, as previously rumored, the next generation of Qualcomm flagship SoC will not be named "Snapdragon 898", but will probably become "Snapdragon 8 Gen1". The exact name will be announced at the Snapdragon Technology Summit held at the end of November.

Snapdragon 898? Nonexistent

Although Qualcomm officially said that the name is "simpler" with one digit plus intergenerational number, for Chinese users, "Snapdragon 8 Gen1" may not be as easy to read and remember as "Snapdragon 898".

Of course, this is not the first time that Qualcomm has changed the naming rules of the Snapdragon mobile platform. Before 2013, Qualcomm divided the Snapdragon product line into four levels: S1, S2, S3, and S4 according to the performance of the mobile SoC; Since 2013, Qualcomm has introduced the current naming system. According to its positioning, the products are divided into four series, namely, Snapdragon 800, Snapdragon 600, Snapdragon 400, and Snapdragon 200. Later, it joined the Snapdragon 700 series product line.
