This morning, Apple's annual WWDC officially opened. The content of WWDC's keynote speech this year can be said to be very "soft", focusing on several major Apple systems - iOS, iPadOS, macOS, watchOS, etc., without any new hardware product release, nor the news of a new generation of self-developed chips.
Now let's take a look at some key points of updating these major systems this year.
iOS 15
In terms of main functions, iOS 15 this year added a new "focus mode" (fruity meditation?), which can display the corresponding APP and notifications according to different scenarios. For example, when working, only work related APP and notification content are displayed, and this mode can be used across Apple devices.
Another new function is "real-time text", which can directly identify the text content in the photo and select copy or other operations (the hammer explosion calls the expert directly).
The notification list has been redesigned and the notification summary function has been added (equivalent to generating a notification brief).
Many updates are actually concentrated on Apple's own APP:
For example, Facetime calls support space audio function and portrait mode, add Facetime call links that can also be opened by Android and Windows devices, and add SharePlay function that can listen to music and watch movies with friends.
The map app adds more details of road/building/vegetation modeling, supports AR navigation and automatically turns on bus location reminders.
Photo APP adds the function of automatically generating recall clips, and can also match the corresponding BGM for clips.
Wallet APP cooperates with more lock and access control system suppliers and automobile manufacturers to support room card and car key functions, and will also support ID card functions in the United States.
Finally, there are the devices supported by iOS 15. Different from the previous rumors, the iPhone 6s generation of 10000 year old nail households is still listed:
iPadOS 15
The iPad OS 15, like the previous iOS, has been added to the APP resource library for automatic classification, which supports the arbitrary arrangement of desktop widgets on each page.
In terms of functions, it mainly strengthens the convenience of multi task operation. It adds shortcut buttons to control the APP window and task cards that can be suspended at the bottom. You can drag the APP into another APP and directly enter the split screen mode.
The quick note function (supported by iPadOS, macOS and iOS) and the global text translation function are added in the lower right corner of the system.
The Safari browser on the iPad can install various Safari extensions just like the Mac.
It is worth mentioning that Swift Playground has also been upgraded, and it can now be used on the iPad to compile and submit apps for iPhone and iPad.
Other new functions of iOS 15 are also supported by iPadOS 15. The devices that support upgrading are shown in the figure below. The oldest can go to the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4:
watchOS 8
The function upgrade of watchOS 8 is not much this time. It mainly introduces a new portrait dial, strengthens the handwriting input function, and adds a photo app to support the browsing and sharing of pictures; Wallet APP supports room card and car key functions like iOS.
In addition, the new mindfulness training APP supports the detection of respiratory rate; Two new sports modes, Tai Chi and Pilates, are added.
macOS Monterey
The new generation of macOS is named Monterey. The macOS Monterey supports the Universal Control function. Mac devices can share keyboards and touch pads with iPads to achieve cross device operations and file sharing (whether it has the flavor of Hongmeng distribution or not).
The new AirPlay to Mac function can project the audio and video content on iPhone and iPad to the Mac.
Safari browser tabs and toolbars have been redesigned to be more concise.
The quick command function of iOS also came to the Mac in this generation.
MacOS Monterey supports devices, and MacBook models in 2015 and later support:
Summary
This keynote speech also introduced privacy protection, HomeKit and other aspects. For detailed introduction of major system function updates, you can also check the Apple official website. The whole press conference seemed to have few highlights compared with last year, and the lack of any hardware release also made many people less interested. Let's leave the expectation to the new iPhone this autumn.
