Associated Press of Finance: Huawei is expected to obtain CPU authorization of Armv9 architecture

On May 25, Arm released three CPU architectures based on ARMv9, including Cortex-X2, Cortex-A710 and Cortex-A510, as well as the new GPU architectures Mali-G710, G610, G510 and G310. On May 27, the Associated Press reported that Huawei was expected to obtain authorization for the new architecture after review.

The Armv9 architecture released by Arm on March 31, compared with the Armv8 architecture that has been used for many years, focuses on improving "security, AI and performance per watt". Arm expects that the CPU performance will increase by about 30% in two years. This architecture will appear on mobile phones and other devices in early 2022. In other words, for the CPU cores of the next two generations: Matterhorn and Makalu, the same frequency IPC will increase by about 14%. The rest are mainly the improvement of security and AI performance.

  • Cortex-X2 is a new generation of Cortex-X1, with 16% performance improvement and twice machine learning performance improvement;

  • Cortex-A710 is the replacement product of A78, whose performance is improved by 10% and energy efficiency is improved by 30% (under the condition of natural isotropy);

  • Cortex-A510 is the A55. Its performance is improved by 10% under the same power consumption, and its power consumption is reduced by 20% under the same power consumption, and machine learning is improved by three times. It also claims a 10% increase over the A73 core in 2017.

There is one saying. In addition to the weak perception of the improvement of machine learning performance, the CPU performance and power consumption that everyone cares about are not enough, and the efforts to squeeze toothpaste are not enough. I don't know that it is impossible to catch up with Apple's A series processors for years.

In PPT, Arm announced that the 8 super core X2, which maximizes the L3 cache heap to 16MB and gives it to 32MB SLC, can have a single core performance 40% better than that of mainstream notebooks in 2020 (of course, the products before M1 and Zen3).

Note that X2 and A510 no longer support the previous 32-bit AArch32 instructions, but A710 will continue to retain 32-bit support. Arm plans to completely switch to 64 bit design in 2023 (Apple's A series has long been switched), and specifically said that this is to give Chinese manufacturers more time to migrate to 64 bit

The person in charge of Arm has previously responded to the progress of cooperation with Huawei: "Arm has both IP originating in the United States and IP not originating in the United States. After a comprehensive review, Arm has determined that its Armv9 architecture is not subject to the U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR). Arm has informed relevant departments of the U.S. government of this, and we will continue to comply with the guidelines of the U.S. Department of Commerce for Huawei and its subsidiary HiSilicon.
