China's smartphone report in the fourth quarter of 2020: Apple's share has soared, but Huawei is still the first

On February 2, it was reported that IDC (International Data Corporation) released the tracking report of China's smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2020. Huawei, which previously fell to the fifth place in the global market, still ranks first in domestic shipments, accounting for more than 1/4 of the total. Apple grew strongly and ranked second, followed by OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi.

In the fourth quarter of 2020, the domestic shipment volume was 86.4 million, up 0.3% year on year. Apple, OPPO, vivo and Xiaomi all showed significant growth. Q4 2020:

  1. Huawei shipped 21.7 million units, down 34.5% year on year, with a market share of 25.1% (33.1 million units in the same period of 2019, with a market share of 38.5%)

  2. Apple shipped 16.7 million units, up 34.7% year on year, with a market share of 19.3% (12.4 million units in the same period of 2019, with a market share of 14.4%)

  3. OPPO shipped 16.7 million units, with a year-on-year growth of 18.3% and a market share of 19.3% (14.1 million units in the same period of 2019, with a market share of 18.3%)

  4. VIVO shipped 15.4 million units, up 9.2% year on year, with a market share of 17.8% (14.1 million units in the same period of 2019, with a market share of 16.4%)

  5. Millet shipped 11.8 million units, a year-on-year increase of 48%, with a market share of 13.7% (8 million units in the same period of 2019, with a market share of 9.3%)

  6. The total shipment of other brands was only 4.1 million, down 6.9% year on year, and the market share was only 4.8%.

Specific information of the fourth quarter:

  • Huawei has been affected by the ban. The shipments of Mate40 series have dropped by more than 60% compared with that of Mate30 series in the same period last year, and the high-end product lines are also out of stock to varying degrees;

  • Apple is the only manufacturer in the top five with positive year-on-year growth in total annual shipments, relying on the strong growth of the iPhone 12 series;

  • For OPPO, A32 and Reno5 series are the main contributors, and the former shipped nearly 4 million units in the fourth quarter;

  • Xiaomi's Redmi Note9 series contributed 2.5 million units in one month. Xiaomi grew by 29% domestically in the second half of the year, and its annual shipments were nearly equal to 2019.

In 2020, China's smartphone shipments will reach 326 million units, down 11.2% year on year. Compared with 2019, except for Apple, the shipments of the top five manufacturers have declined to varying degrees, but this has no impact on the ranking of the whole year:

  • Huawei remains the number one, 38.3%, with a slight decrease of 0.1%

  • vivo, 17.7%, up 0.4%

  • OPPO 17.4%, Proportion rose slightly by 0.3%

  • Millet 12%, up 1.1%

  • Apple 11.1%, up 2.2%

  • The source of increase from the second to the fifth place is "others". Other manufacturers accounted for 3.5% in total, down 3%. The trend of oligarchy is becoming increasingly obvious.
