Another family fell? LG Considers Exiting the Smartphone Market

In January 2021, it seems that the fleeting years are not going well, and shrimp, nut cell phone and rice chat have fallen down one after another. On January 20, the Korean Herald reported that LG was considering withdrawing from the smartphone market.

The Korean Herald reported that LG CEO Quan Fengxi sent a message to employees on Wednesday, suggesting that LG's smartphone department would undergo major changes, but would maintain jobs. It is rumored that 60% of employees would be transferred to other departments. LG official explained that "it is time to make indifferent judgments and the best choice. The company is considering all possible measures, including selling, withdrawing and reducing the scale of smartphone business". It is said that 60% of the employees will be transferred to other departments. I don't know whether the scroll screen mobile phones can catch up with the mass production.

LG mobile phones have always been one of the main forces of "foreign garbage" mobile phones because of the fierce price reduction. LG Wing (Snapdragon 765G, surprise), a side flip screen mobile phone, was released last year, and CES also released the latest scroll screen mobile phone this year. However, there is a saying that there is a lack of competitive volume flagship, and the sense of existence of LG mobile phones is getting lower and lower, but I did not expect that things have become so serious.

In order to reverse the decline, LG expanded the scope of ODM in 2019. According to Counterpoint, a market research company, LG accounted for more than 70% of ODM orders last year, while Samsung accounted for only 30% of ODM orders.

Similarly, according to Counterpoint, LG shipped 6.5 million units in the third quarter of 2020, down from 7.2 million units in the same period of 2019, leaving only 2% of the market share. LG's mobile business has lost money for 23 consecutive quarters. The operating loss in the third quarter of 2020 was 148.4 billion won, and the total loss in the past five years was 5 trillion won, about 29.3 billion yuan.
