600 million pixels! It is rumored that Samsung is developing a new sensor: the best partner of telescopic lens?

Recently, Ice Universe announced again on Twitter that Samsung is developing a 600 million pixel sensor. At the same time, the sensor size calculated according to the existing technical data is also released. If calculated according to 0.8 μ m unit pixel, the diagonal length of the 600 million pixel sensor will be as high as 1/0.57 inch, and the thickness of the camera module will reach 22 mm. A single camera will occupy 12% of the area of the back of the phone.

At the end of last year, Samsung launched a 100 million pixel sensor, which has been ridiculed by netizens as "wrong direction", but Samsung does not seem to stop. In April this year, Samsung officially released an editorial article, saying that its goal is to develop a 600 million pixel sensor that exceeds the human eye resolution (the official said that 500 million pixels is the limit of the human eye). It was previously rumored that Samsung was working on a 250 million pixel sensor.

In order to give consideration to weak light imaging, the unit pixel of the sensor cannot be too small. The mainstream flagship sensors have developed from 1.12 μ m, 1.22/1.25 μ m, 1.4/1.55 μ m to the current 2.1/2.24/2.4 μ m (after 4 in 1 or 9 in 1). Even though mainstream sensors have been fixed at 12 million pixels for many years, the size of sensors is increasing day by day. According to Samsung's 600 million sensor exposure, Samsung should adopt a unit pixel size significantly smaller than 0.8 μ m.

The smallest unit pixel CMOS currently on sale is the 0.7 μ m Samsung S5KHM2 (1/1.52 inch, 9 in 1 into 2.1 μ m, dual native ISO) launched by Redmi Note 9 Pro. For the same pixel, the projection area of the 0.7 μ m scheme is only 76.5% of the 0.8 μ m scheme. If it is 0.6 μ m, it is only about 56.3%.

But even if we ignore the processing capacity of the mobile phone ISP first, the CMOS with up to 600 million pixels cannot be stuffed into a normal mobile phone. I don't know what solution Samsung will use to solve this bug (Xiaomi's previous telescopic lens patent?). As a melon eater, we'd better wait for the 250 million pixel CMOS as the "former sentry" to come out first.
