On November 19, it was reported that Apple yesterday announced a new developer plan, which said that from January 1, 2021, all developers who sell digital goods and services in the App Store with annual revenue less than $1 million will enjoy a commission rate of 15%.
The specific standards listed officially are:
Existing developers, as well as developers who have launched products in the App Store for the first time, can participate in this plan and enjoy reduced commission rates if the total revenue of all their apps in 2020 is less than $1 million.
If the revenue of developers participating in the program exceeds the limit of $1 million, the remaining time of the year will be charged at the standard commission rate (i.e. 30%).
If the business income of developers does not reach $1 million in the next calendar year, they can be eligible for 15% commission in the next year.
Previously, Apple has maintained a 30% commission rate for the App Store, which is also commonly known as "Apple Tax", and has been one of the main sources of Apple's software service revenue for many years (also a source of conflict between Apple and some application developers).
The reason why this plan is announced now, according to Apple's official statement, is to reduce the pressure on small application developers and developers, so that they can have more resources to invest and develop their businesses in the App Store ecosystem in the context of the pandemic and the challenges facing the global economy.
Of course, the main beneficiaries of this plan are small and medium-sized developers with limited revenue. Large application developers with revenue of hundreds of millions have to pay 30% of the transaction commission in projects involving in app charges.
According to the estimation of foreign research organization Sensor Tower, about 98% of application developers will benefit from this, and the revenue generated by these developers last year accounted for about 5% of the total revenue of the App Store.
