Restructure the semiconductor industry! Nvidia will acquire ARM for $40 billion

On September 14, it was reported that Nvidia officially announced a blockbuster news this morning, saying that it had reached an agreement with ARM to purchase this well-known chip design company from Softbank Group with 40 billion dollars.

It is reported that Nvidia will purchase in the form of stock+cash. After the transaction is completed, Softbank will still retain less than 10% of ARM shares.

However, this transaction needs to be approved by multiple regulatory authorities in China, the United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom. It is estimated that the approval will take one and a half years. If the deal is concluded, it will be the largest acquisition in the semiconductor field in recent years, and the strong alliance between Nvidia and ARM will essentially reconstruct the pattern of the semiconductor field.

Nvidia's vision for this acquisition includes combining the resources of the two companies in the AI field to promote innovation; Establish a world-class AI research and education center, and build an AI supercomputer driven by ARM and Nvidia to conduct breakthrough research. At the same time, Nvidia promises to continue to maintain ARM's open licensing model and customer neutrality, and expand ARM's IP licensing product portfolio through its own technology.

For ARM, mobile phone digital enthusiasts may be most familiar with the CPU and GPU architecture design launched by the company every year, which has long been adopted by Qualcomm, Samsung, MediaTek, Hisense and other mobile phone chip design companies, also known as the public architecture. In May this year, ARM released the latest Cortex-A78, Cortex-X1 CPU, Mali-G78 GPU and Ethos-N78 NPU.
