On July 9, Intel officially announced the new Thunderbolt 4 interface standard last night.
Compared with the doubling of bandwidth brought by Thunderbolt 3 released in 2015, Thunderbolt 4 has the same interface bandwidth requirement - 40Gbps, but there are still changes in other specifications, including support for dual 4K output and 32Gb/s PCIe transmission rate. In terms of compatibility, Thunderbolt 4 will be compatible with USB 4, DP and PCIe protocols.
Intel also released 8000 series Thunderbolt 4 controllers, including JHL8540 and JHL8340 controllers for PC and JHL8440 controllers for accessory manufacturers. The controllers support four Thunderbolt 4 interfaces. The products equipped with Lightning 4 interface are expected to be launched this year.
In addition, although it has announced on WWDC that it will turn to self-developed Mac chips, Apple said that in the future Mac will still support Thunderbolt, an interface standard led by Intel.
The requirements for Thunderbolt 4 certification officially released by Intel include:
Support simultaneous output of two 4K displays or connection of one 8K display
Support 32Gb/s PCIe transmission rate
Supports Intel VT-d based DMA protection
The minimum requirement for certification is to support 40Gbps speed on general cable within 2m
Docking station supporting at least 4 lightning interfaces
At least one interface supports 100W charging
When connecting the lightning docking station, you can wake the computer from sleep by touching the keyboard or mouse
