On July 30, it was reported that Canalys, a foreign market research organization, released a research report on the global smartphone market in the second quarter today. The most noteworthy point in this report is that Huawei successfully surpassed Samsung in mobile phone shipments in the current quarter, becoming the global smartphone shipment champion in a single quarter for the first time.
Specifically, Huawei shipped 55.8 million units in the second quarter, although there was a 5% year-on-year decline, it still exceeded Samsung, which shipped 53.7 million units, a full 30% year-on-year decline. This is the first time in nine years that a mobile phone manufacturer other than Samsung or Apple has won the first place in quarterly shipments.
Canalys said that 72% of Huawei's shipments are currently concentrated in the Chinese market, while the current epidemic situation in China has been completely controlled, and the mobile phone production capacity and offline store business have already recovered, so Huawei's market performance has not been affected; Samsung's share in China's domestic market is very small, less than 1%. Its core markets, such as the United States, Europe, Brazil and India, have been hit hard by the COVID-19 epidemic, leading to a significant reduction in shipments.
Canalys said that in the long run, it is difficult for Huawei to maintain its leading position. Its main partners in Europe are increasingly cautious about introducing Huawei products. Once the global economy starts to recover, only relying on shipments in the Chinese market is not enough to keep Huawei at the top of the list.
