Four years ago, Apple launched the first generation AirPods, which was initially ridiculed and questioned, and now has completely led to the development of the whole TWS (true wireless) headset category. Apple has also firmly held half of the market share of TWS headphones in the past two years, just like its position in the tablet field.
A recent report from Canalys, a market research organization, shows that in the first quarter of 2020, Apple shipped 18.1 million TWS headsets, accounting for 41.4% of the total market shipments (43.8 million), continuing to rank first. The strong performance of AirPods Pro accounted for a considerable part of the factors. Canalys said that the first quarter shipment of AirPods Pro reached 5.5 million.
Although it is still strong, compared with the share of the same period last year, it can be seen that Apple's leading edge has begun to shrink to a certain extent, which is related to the continuous catch-up of competitors. Samsung, ranked second, shipped 4.5 million units in the first quarter, accounting for 10.3% of the share, while three to five were respectively occupied by domestic Redmi, QCY and Huawei.
It is worth noting that four of the top five (Apple, Samsung, Redmi, Huawei) in the TWS headset market are smart phone manufacturers, which also shows the close integration of mobile phones and TWS headsets in terms of device ecology. Canalys also predicted that the annual shipment of TWS earphones is expected to increase by 29% in 2020, and the annual cumulative shipment will exceed 200 million sets.
