Meizu 17 Pro experience evaluation: later, first?
Meizu 17 Pro experience evaluation: later, first?
2021-06-02 14:31

Compared with the bustle of more than ten "concerts" in 2016, Meizu, whose market share has narrowed significantly in the past two years, has picked up the label of "small and beautiful" again, and its product line has been streamlined, paying more attention to polishing key products; However, because of the shrinking volume brought about by the share decline, Meizu's voice and energy in the supply chain are also much less than before, which may be why Meizu 17 Series, as the flagship, was officially released on May 8, one to two months later than other flagship in the first half of the year.

However, we have also heard the saying "Good food is never too late". Does the late Meizu 17 Pro show more advantages than other products that compete with the market? The author will talk about something through this experience evaluation.

#This evaluation is based on Meizu 17 Pro fixed white (12+256GB) version

appearance

In the past two years, manufacturers have been exploring various full screen configurations of mobile phones. They have tried all kinds of schemes such as bangs, water drops and lifting. However, Meizu has always adhered to the upper and lower symmetrical design of the flagship 16th and 16s/16s Pro, which has a relatively conservative screen proportion. However, the bottleneck of the symmetrical design is that the front camera always occupies a certain forehead width, It's hard to maximize the proportion of screens. Last year, the 16s series had already squeezed the potential of this scheme. It's time to change the appearance design of the 17 series.

The selection of Huangzhang is the popular hole digging screen this year, with the aperture compressed to 2.99mm, which minimizes the interference of the hole on the screen vision and almost turns it into an icon in the status bar; At the same time, in order to create a visual effect close to the four sides of the same width, Meizu has abandoned the design of the 16s like narrow left and right borders, making the 17 Pro slightly wider than the 16s Pro in the width of the left and right borders. Its left and right upper sides are basically the same width, while the chin is slightly wider. If the chin seal is more extreme, it can completely achieve the four sides of the same width, But it will cost more.

Small aperture+nearly equal width on four sides makes Meizu 17 Pro's visual screen's proportion and visual balance quite prominent, and the white frame adds a lot to the beauty. The drawback is that this generation of Meizu 17 series has abandoned the suspension dispensing process, and there is a layer of plastic binding between the screen and the frame, which looks obvious on the white version, and has a slight sense of fragmentation visually.

On the back, the white ceramic back cover makes the machine look very simple, and the exquisite feeling of matching with the metal middle frame is absolutely one of the best flagship machines this year.

However, this "explosion-proof shield" design is a major controversy of Meizu 17 series. Previously, Samsung used this design more, such as S10 series and Note 8/Note 9. This time, the controversy of Meizu 17 series is that the position of the camera module is too high at first sight. However, I personally think that this may also be influenced by the preconceived appearance of Samsung models. In fact, it is not difficult to accept it after a long time.

However, the position of the camera module does cause the picture to be easily blocked by fingers when the ultra wide angle lens is turned on for shooting. You need to adjust your camera posture.

In terms of grip, Meizu 17 Pro, because of its ceramic material, weighs 219g. Since the 16th, the lightweight advantage of Meizu's flagship machine has disappeared. Instead, it has a full sense of weight. Users who care about weight should consider the 199g standard Meizu 17 or other lighter models.

screen

For the screen part, Meizu 17 Pro full screen manual maximum brightness is 518 nits, and local maximum brightness is 660 nits; Full screen excitation under strong light (high brightness mode needs to be turned on) with brightness of 735 nits and local peak brightness of 1033 nits.

The system has four built-in color modes for adjustment: adaptive, standard, photo and bright colors, among which:

default Adaptive mode , color temperature 7083K, covering 128.8% of sRGB and 94.2% of P3 gamut, sRGB average deltaE 4.4, P3 average deltaE 3.2, average gray scale deviation 2.7;

(adaptive mode sRGB color deviation)

Standard mode , color temperature 7057K, covering 94.2% sRGB color gamut, sRGB average deltaE 2.6;

Photo mode , color temperature 7109K, covering 99.2% sRGB, 86.3% P3 and 87.8% Adobe RGB color gamut, sRGB average deltaE 4.7, Adobe RGB average deltaE 3.0;

Vivid mode , color temperature 7070K, covering 105.3% P3 color gamut, P3 average deltaE 3.1

The screen brightness of Meizu 17 Pro is at a normal level among the domestic flagship brands that use 1080P Samsung AMOLED screens this year, but it should be noted that its excitation brightness can only be triggered by turning on the high brightness mode in Settings Lab; The color accuracy performance in each color mode is relatively general, and there is still a gap between Samsung, OnePlus and other flagship computers equipped with top OLED screens.

performance

The hardware configuration of Meizu 17 Pro belongs to the mainstream level of this year's flagship computers, including Snapdragon 865 chip, LPDDR5 memory and UFS 3.1 flash memory. There is no need to worry about the performance. Let's first look at a wave of running points.

Flash Memory

In addition to testing theoretical performance, I also ran a large game to observe its actual performance output in a high load scenario:

The highest picture quality of Collapse 3

Peace Elite 90 frame mode+balanced image quality

Peace Elite 90 frame mode+HDR HD image quality

It can be seen that Meizu 17 Pro can smoothly run 60 frames of full height picture quality of Collapse 3 and 90 frame mode+balanced picture quality of Peace Elite. If you switch to 90 frames of Peace Elite+HDR high-definition picture quality, there will be a certain degree of fluctuation, which is mainly reflected in the scene of dramatic changes in driving vehicles and other pictures. In the later stage of the game, due to the body heating, Frame drop and fluctuation will be greater, which may also touch the game performance limit of Snapdragon 865 platform.

photograph

First, let's look at the camera hardware parameters. This Meizu 17 Pro rear four camera, including the f/1.8 aperture 64 megapixel IMX686 main camera, f/2.4 aperture, 8 megapixel triple telephoto lens (OV 08A10), f/2.2 aperture, 32 megapixel ultra wide-angle/macro lens (IMX616), and 300000 pixel TOF depth lens.

Compared with the standard version of Meizu 17, Meizu 17 Pro has three times more telephoto focus, and is more skillful in dealing with telephoto scenes. However, compared with last year's 16s, the main camera has canceled optical anti shake, which may affect the film yield in low light scenes. The Meizu 17 Pro camera configuration is relatively comprehensive in terms of functionality. From ultra wide angle to triple telephoto to macro, it can cope with common focal segments and themes.

Let's take a look at the live photos:

Main camera

Super wide-angle

long-focus

Macro (Ultra Wide Angle)

Main night scene

Super wide angle night view

Night view of telephoto

In the scene with sufficient sunlight in the daytime, the image of the main camera is good. The HDR algorithm suppresses highlights very strongly, but the details are slightly smeared. Compared with the 48 million pixel (four in one 12 million) model, it does not play the analytical advantage brought by higher pixels; The ultra wide-angle lens imaging perspective is indeed wide enough, but it does not give full play to the advantage of 32 million pixels, but the details are lost seriously; On the contrary, this 3x telephoto lens has the standard of mainstream flagship in terms of film appearance and detail performance.

In terms of night scene performance, when the night scene mode is not turned on, the main photo of Meizu 17 Pro deviates in the sense of hierarchy, and it is also easy to lose the dark details, which may be related to the lack of optical anti shake. Viewing the photo information, it can be found that the night scene photo of Meizu 17 Pro in the automatic mode can only set the shutter to 1/25 second at the slowest; The contrast and dynamic range are improved to a certain extent after the nightscape mode is turned on. The color style of the nightscape mode is also a pleasant type, and Meizu's nightscape mode synthesis time is short, which does not affect the shooting experience. It is recommended that the nightscape mode be turned on at night and in dark scenes.

(Left: automatic mode, right: night view mode)

It is worth mentioning that Meizu 17 Pro night scene mode also supports ultra wide angle and telephoto lenses in addition to the main camera, and can also select any focal section steplessly, which improves the night scene imaging effect of other focal sections except the main camera to a certain extent. Of course, due to the defect of ultra wide angle and telephoto CMOS area, its night scene film forming effect has a strong sense of smearing, In particular, the perception is particularly obvious when the picture is put on the computer.

On the whole, the photos of Meizu 17 Pro have nothing to do with the 4000 yuan flagship this year. The current imaging performance has not fully exploited the potential of the hardware, and we hope that it can be further improved through firmware upgrade in the future.

experience

In terms of experience, the author personally believes that Meizu 17 Pro has the strongest perception improvement compared with the previous generation of OLED screen with a 90Hz refresh rate. Meizu's 1080P 90Hz OLED screen specification is not top class. After all, several 2K 120Hz OLED models are there this year, but this is also the first time Meizu has used high screen swiping and won an essential selling point of this year's flagship.

Most Android models have developed full screen gestures before, but at a 60Hz refresh rate, there is no lack of frame dropping. Compared with the full screen gesture experience of the iPhone, the author personally used mBack as the basic interaction mode on previous Meizu models, and went to the 90Hz 17 Pro, The full screen gesture, which has greatly improved its smoothness, can finally become the preferred basic interaction.

Although the addition of 90Hz has greatly improved the smoothness of 17 Pro operation, the overall sliding damping of the system is strong, and it occasionally feels difficult to slide when browsing some information flow APPs. If you are used to adding a system that is purely fast, this feeling will be more obvious.

Meizu previously added a 120Hz tasting option to the 17 series through OTA, and the screen's sliding smoothness has been further improved after being turned on. However, the screen color adjustment in this 120Hz mode has obviously not been done well. The screen in our hand will appear visible red after being turned on, and 90Hz is enough for daily use, At present, 120Hz can only be used for "tasting".

At the system experience level, the most perceptive highlight of the Flyme 8 on the 17 Pro is the new small window mode. Previously, Flyme 7's small window could only be opened passively when receiving notifications from WeChat and QQ. Although it is convenient to open and reply to messages in the video and game scenarios, it does not really touch the potential of small window mode in multi task processing.

Now, the small window mode can slide inward at the lower left and right corners of the screen, and users can customize any APP small window mode to be opened. By default, four commonly used APPs are displayed. Of course, you can click the ellipsis beside the open button to add an unlimited number of APPs. In this way, in some use scenarios where you don't want to jump out of the current application interface for the time being, you can easily open another small window APP to achieve efficiency upgrading of multitasking. For example, the author often opens the small window of WeChat or Weibo to browse information when watching some lecture videos, so that the video will not be interrupted because of the need to cut out other applications, and can also be used for two purposes at one time.

As for other aspects of Flyme 8, the new Aicy voice assistant highlights that the voice is more intimate, but compared with Xiao'ai students with ecological blessing from Mijia, it is not very useful in daily life; Advertisements and some annoying push in the system application still exist (as shown in the figure below), which needs to be closed manually; There are also some minor defects that are not well adapted. For example, when testing flash memory, it is found that applications such as AndroBench do not support forced full screen. However, on the whole, Flyme still maintains the leading level of domestic customized ROMs in terms of function and aesthetics.

Meizu 17 Pro is still equipped with a horizontal linear motor, mEngine 3.0. Compared with the vibration feedback of one plus 8 Pro and Xiaomi 10 Pro, the vibration of 17 Pro is more compact. As the first manufacturer of horizontal linear motor in the Android camp, the calibration of 17 Pro remains at a high level. What needs to be improved is that the scene of vibration feedback has not been fully adapted, for example, the most common side slip return operation does not give vibration, and vibration adaptation for third-party applications is also quite rare; In addition, there is a high probability that the vibration feedback can not keep up during fast typing, which causes that some inputs do not give a vibration drop.

As for the dual speakers on the 17 Pro, it should be said that the overall volume and sound field performance are not as good as this year's "music phone" Xiaomi 10 Pro, but compared with other domestic Android flagship equipped with dual speakers, it is still not inferior.

Endurance/charging

Meizu 17 Pro is equipped with 4500mAh battery, which is matched with Flyme's relatively good power saving optimization since last year. It is expected that the endurance performance will not be poor. stay Love to play computer games In the 2-hour endurance test, Meizu 17 Pro with 90Hz refresh rate has 83% remaining power, which is equivalent to Xiaomi 10 Pro. It is reflected that in daily use, from going out in the morning to going home in the evening, there is no problem for moderate use with one charge every day.

In terms of charging, Meizu 17 Pro has finally upgraded the wired fast charge from the 24W PE of Wannian to the new 30W specification. The measured charging starts from zero power, and it can be charged to 87% in an hour. It takes 1 hour and 38 minutes to fully charge, and the later trickle charging takes a long time. This achievement is only average among today's flagship machines, even not comparable to this year's mid tier models. If the subsequent products want to reach the mainstream level of filling within one hour, Meizu will have to improve the fast charging specification.

Although the wired fast charging specification is not very impressive, the Meizu 17 Pro still has the blessing of 27W wireless charging, which is a supplement. Usually, a wireless charger is put in the office to charge as you put it, which is a comfortable experience to keep the phone high power all the time. Like all models that support wireless charging, chargers need to be purchased separately. Users who need wireless charging can consider starting with them.

summary

Like last year's 16s/16s Pro, this year's Meizu 17 Pro still has some shortcomings, such as the fast charging performance is still not flagship, the camera lacks optical anti shake The 1080P/90Hz screen specification is not top class, and even the original thin and light selling points are gone. Some optimization deficiencies also indicate that Meizu has not brought more refined polishing after falling behind in the release rhythm.

However, Meizu still retains its own characteristics in today's increasingly convergent sea of aircraft, such as the visual beauty of broadband such as super small aperture+near four sides, the only white front panel on the market, the excellent texture brought by the ceramic body, Flyme, which is still easy to use with small functions, the vibration feedback of the first echelon The dual speakers and good endurance also make the 17 Pro appear quite balanced on the whole.

Therefore, Meizu 17 Pro has a relatively clear audience: diehard "kerosene", users who are looking for a balanced flagship or are simply interested in its appearance and texture. If you are more concerned about the extremely smooth screen experience, the lightweight feel, or the fast charging experience and photo performance of mobile phones, or simply want a high cost performance 865 model, Then there are indeed more outstanding competitors on the market than Meizu 17 Pro.
