WWDC 2020 summary: iOS interface changes greatly, Mac turns to self-developed chip

In the early morning of June 23, Beijing time, Apple's annual WWDC officially opened. This year, due to the special factors of the epidemic, the keynote speech was presented to the audience online in the form of recording and broadcasting. Although the form has changed, the weight of the content is not less than in previous years. Let's see what WWDC 2020 has released.

By the way, WWDC has not released new hardware products for consumers this year. If you are looking forward to hardware, then... you may as well continue to watch.

iOS 14

First, iOS, which is the most important in Apple's ecosystem, is different from the previous rumors. It is still called iOS and has not changed its name to iPhone OS.

IOS 14 has made significant changes in its interface layout compared with iOS in the past few years. First, it introduced the App Library interface, which slides from the main screen to the right, automatically sorts and classifies all the APPs in the machine, and provides APP suggestions, mainly to put all installed APPs on one page to solve the problem of quickly finding applications.

Secondly, desktop widgets have been added (I don't know how many people's youth has ended), such as clock, stock, weather, schedule, music player and other components, which can be placed in any corner of the desktop and occupy four or two rows of desktop space. The whole layout looks a little like Windows Phone in those days.

In addition to the interface, another major update of iOS 14 is the introduction of new App Clips, which can be understood as Apple's applet/quick app. It is mainly used for low-frequency use scenarios that require efficient use of relevant functions, such as ordering meals, renting bicycles, paying parking fees, etc. It can be called out through NFC or 2D code.

When the new Siri is called out, it no longer covers the whole screen, but only occupies a small part at the bottom. Apple claims that Siri now has 20 times more information than it did three years ago, but it is still not as "stupid" as before, and it needs to be seen; In addition to voice commands, users can now send audio messages through Siri.

A new translator is built into iOS 14, which currently supports voice or text translation in 11 languages, including English, Chinese, Japanese, French, Spanish, and offline use.

Video applications support the picture in picture function. Now you can hover the video playback window above other applications, and the multi task processing ability+1.

AirPods will support more seamless switching between devices. For example, when you wear AirPods to watch videos on a Mac, when an iPhone calls, AirPods can automatically switch to the phone to answer the call; The AirPods Pro will also support the new "space audio" function.

Other functions, such as map APP and CarPlay, have also been updated. The map will provide city guides and the function of indicating charging stations for electric vehicle drivers; IOS will support the function of using mobile phones as car keys in the future, um... but you may need a BMW 5 Series.

IOS 14 supports the following devices, from the oldest iPhone 6s to the latest iPhone SE 2 and iPhone 11 series:

iPadOS

Many upgrade points of iPadOS are the same as iOS 14, which belongs to the same origin. Here we mainly refer to the characteristic upgrade of iPadOS itself.

The overall interface changes little, and various widgets can now be added to the side.

The photo app interface has been redesigned, and more options have been placed in the newly added sidebar.

The new drop-down search interface and incoming calls no longer occupy the whole screen space.

In the aspect of Apple Pencil, it supports automatic conversion of handwriting to text and pasting handwriting content into other applications, and even can automatically correct the geometry you draw by handwriting.

On the whole, there are not many functional upgrades of iPadOS 14 this year. After all, the major interactive update supporting mouse and touch pad has been completed on iPadOS 13.4.

The following devices will be supported by iPadOS 14:

watchOS 7

When I came to watchOS 7, I upgraded these major features:

Dial sharing

This generation of watchOS supports more complicated functions of dials. Users can directly download and install their favorite dials on third-party websites, or long press the dials to share them with friends.

Sleep monitoring

This generation of watchOS supports the sleep mode. When a user sleeps, the watch automatically enters the "Do Not Disturb Mode", reduces the interference of the lock screen interface, tracks the user's sleep, and automatically forms a sleep analysis chart.

Hand washing mode

During the epidemic, frequent hand washing is essential. Now your Apple Watch will be able to judge whether you are in the process of washing hands by monitoring the hand washing action and monitoring the sound of running water through the microphone, and urge you to wash for 20 seconds.

In addition, the map APP in watchOS 7 has added the riding guidance function, and the physical training function has added the dance mode.

macOS BigSur

This year's macOS was named "BigSur", and the design elements of the whole system also ushered in a major change. The system application icon was redrawn, which was close to iOS/iPadOS in style. The icon outline was all rounded rectangles, but some original mimetic elements of macOS were still retained.

MacOS BigSur has added a new control center and notification center, and their design styles are similar to those of iPadOS.

Safari browser has also been upgraded. The new Safari supports extensions like Chrome, which can be downloaded in the MacOS App Store; It supports hover preview tab content, supports the start page with changeable background, and can also better identify and reverse the tracking of users by the website to protect users' privacy.

Messages and maps have also been partially updated.

Of course, all the MacOS updates may not be as important as the following.

Mac turns to Apple's self-developed chip

According to the previous rumors, at the end of the keynote speech, Apple CEO Cook announced a blockbuster news: Apple will switch to self-developed processing chips (ARM) on the Mac.

Cook said that there have been three major transitions in the history of Mac, namely, the transition to PowerPC architecture processors, the transition to Mac OS X systems, and later the transition to Intel processors. Now is a historic moment for the transition to Apple's self-developed chips.

Apple's self-developed Mac chip will still be the same as the A-series chip currently installed on mobile phones and tablets. It will adopt the form of SoC integrating CPU, GPU, neural engine and other components. It is worth mentioning that the Mac demo machine used in the press conference is equipped with the same chip of iPad Pro - A12Z, which can smoothly perform the task of editing 4K videos from the perspective of demonstration.

In terms of software adaptation, Apple's own macOS software has been adapted, including video editing software. Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop are also available. To help developers adapt, Apple has also prepared cross platform migration tools such as Xcode and Rosetta 2; Thanks to the same architecture as mobile phones and tablet chips, macOS will be able to run a large number of iOS and iPadOS applications seamlessly in the future.

Apple officially said that it will complete the transition from Intel to self-developed ARM chips within two years, and the first Mac model equipped with self-developed chips will be released at the end of this year.

Apple has also prepared a DTK for developers, which uses the same shape as the Mac mini, is equipped with A12Z chip, 16GB memory and 512GB SSD, and built-in macOS BigSur developer beta system and Xcode tool. This is the only hardware released by WWDC this time.
