On May 15, it was reported that a few days ago, the Wall Street Journal reported that TSMC was preparing to invest billions of dollars to build a factory in Arizona. At the same time, the United States said it hoped to stop relying on chips produced in Asia.
Today, TSMC announced that under the mutual understanding and support of the U.S. federal government and Arizona, TSMC plans to establish and operate an advanced semiconductor factory in the United States.
TSMC said that the factory will be built in Arizona, using TSMC's 5nm technology to produce semiconductor wafers, with a monthly capacity of 20000, directly creating 1600+high-tech professional jobs and thousands of indirect jobs.
TSMC's main production base for 5nm process is located in the 18th wafer factory in Tainan Science Park
The plant is planned to be started in 2021 and put into production in 2024. From 2021 to 2029, TSMC will spend about 12 billion dollars (including capital expenditure) on the project. TSMC believes that building factories in the United States not only enables them to better support customers and partners, but also provides TSMC with more opportunities to attract global talents.
TSMC said in its official press release: "The project is of vital strategic significance to a vibrant and competitive American semiconductor ecosystem, enabling leading semiconductor companies in the United States to manufacture cutting-edge semiconductor products in the United States, benefit from approaching a world-class semiconductor foundry and ecosystem, and benefit from the proximity of world-class semiconductor foundries and ecosystems."
At present, TSMC has set up an additional wafer factory in Kamas, Washington, and design centers in Austin, Texas and San Jose, California. The Arizona factory will be TSMC's second production base in the United States.
