On May 22, it was reported that Samsung recently announced that it would build a new chip factory focusing on 5nm EUV manufacturing process in Pingze, South Korea, to meet the growing 5nm chip foundry capacity demand in the future. It is reported that Samsung has invested 8 billion dollars for this production line, and the factory will be completed and put into operation in the second half of 2021.
Starting this year, the manufacturing process of cutting-edge semiconductor chips will gradually be upgraded from 7nm to more advanced 5nm, which is undoubtedly the top priority for TSMC and Samsung, the two major contract manufacturing giants in the industry. At present, TSMC has obtained 5nm chip contract orders from Apple and Huawei HiSilicon - not surprisingly, A14 and the new Kirin 1000 series flagship chips, Samsung's mass production will start several months later. At present, only one production line has the OEM production capacity of 5nm EUV process, which forces Samsung to speed up the expansion of production capacity.
Therefore, when asked about Samsung's new 5nm production line, TSMC responded: "We do not comment on any developments of our competitors, but we are confident that we will continue to lead in technology".
