On April 24, Bloomberg reported that Apple plans to launch at least one Mac with ARM processor next year. A source said that Apple is developing three ARM based processors for the Mac, which are improved from the A14 of the new iPhone. The Mac processor is more powerful than the processors used by the iPhone and iPad.
How powerful will the new processor be? It is reported that the first of the three chips will have eight high-performance cores, which are codenamed Firestorm, and at least four low-power cores, codenamed Icestorm. The later models are all more than 12 cores. The A13 used in the iPhone 11 series has only six cores, which is far from the Mac processor.
The new processor for Mac will be produced by TSMC with a 5nm process. It is a complete chipset, including CPU and GPU, similar to the current Apple A-series SoC.
Mac equipped with ARM processor will continue to run macOS, and Apple may migrate existing x86 software to ARM instruction set. Foreign media speculated that the first Mac with ARM processor should be MacBook, because the low power consumption brought by ARM is more suitable for laptops.
