Apple may give up the Lightning interface, but it is not its intention

On January 14, it was reported that since 2012, Apple has been using the Lightning interface on the iPhone. So far, Apple has shown no interest in replacing the Lightning interface with USB-C. However, if the EU issues relevant regulations, Apple may be forced to use the USB-C interface.

A few days ago, some members of the European Commission discussed whether all smart phones, tablets and other portable devices should have a standardized interface to reduce waste and increase convenience. The EU has encouraged technology companies to do so, but they believe that efforts so far have not been enough.

Some lawmakers are seeking to pass a law that would force technology companies to use the same interface in the region. The options they consider include micro USB, Apple's dedicated Lightning, and the more common USB-C. The list on this issue is decided to be held during the next session of the Parliament. However, legislators are likely to vote for technology companies to voluntarily comply with the regulations, but Apple and other companies should ignore these regulations.

Apple has previously responded that forcing all smartphones to use the same interface will "freeze innovation". In addition, as more than 1 billion Apple devices use Lightning interface, the adoption of new regulations will generate "unprecedented amount of electronic waste", which is harmful to the environment.
