On September 18, it was reported by DigiTimes that TSMC is currently the largest foundry of chips in the world. It manufactures chips for many chip design companies, including Huawei, Apple and Qualcomm. TSMC said that last year it "produced 10436 different products for 481 different customers using 261 different technologies", of which Apple brought the most revenue to TSMC.
At present, the most advanced chip process of TSMC is 7nm, which is adopted by Huawei Kirin 990 5G version, including 10.3 billion transistors. TSMC will start to produce chips with 5nm process next year, and 3nm chips will be mass produced by 2022.
At present, the delivery cycle of TSMC is 6 months, which is three times that of the previous two months. If TSMC customers want a stable chip supply, they must place orders in advance. The company said that only customers who purchase 7nm chips and those who are expanding production capacity will have a longer delivery cycle. It is reported that TSMC gives priority to Apple's demand for 7nm chips and uses most of its production capacity on A13 Bionic, which is one of the reasons why the lead time has doubled.
Although TSMC's business is booming, this year's smartphone sales are expected to decline by 3.8%, but the longer TSMC's delivery time indicates that the situation in 2020 should improve. Gartner, a market research firm, expects smartphone sales to grow by 1.5% next year.
