Apple admitted that Foxconn violated the labor law, and the proportion of temporary workers producing iPhones exceeded the standard

On September 9, it was reported that many of Apple's products were designed in California, the United States, and produced by agents in China and other countries. Recently, Bloomberg reported that Apple and Foxconn, the largest iPhone agent, were accused by the China Labor Watch (CLW) of violating China's labor laws.

According to an undercover investigation of Foxconn's Zhengzhou factory, the China Labor Watch found that temporary workers accounted for half of the total number of employees last month. The Labor Law of the People's Republic of China stipulates that labor dispatching personnel shall not account for more than 10% of the total labor force. Apple acknowledged the findings and said it was working with Foxconn to solve the problem. It should be noted that Foxconn employs a large number of temporary workers every year to increase iPhone production at certain times, such as festivals and shopping seasons.

The China Labor Watch pointed out that the temporary workers in Foxconn factories accounted for 55% of the total number of workers last year and increased by 50% last month. However, a large part of these workers were interns composed of students who returned to school at the end of last month, reducing the proportion of temporary workers to 30%. Although the proportion of temporary workers has decreased, they still violate the labor law.

In addition to excessive use of temporary workers, the overtime of Foxconn workers "does not comply with the company's regulations". Foxconn said that they will pay close attention to the situation and "will not hesitate to take any additional steps that may be required to meet the high standards we set."

It is reported that the goal of the Zhengzhou Foxconn factory is to produce 120 million iPhones per shift. Since the manufacturing process of iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max is more complex than iPhone X, the China Labor Observation Organization believes that Foxconn needs more workers to assemble these models. The new iPhone will be released next year and will go on sale on September 20.
