On July 1, it was reported by Reuters that Japan would restrict the export of fluorinated polyimide, corrosion inhibitor and high-purity hydrogen fluoride (HF) to South Korea from July 4. These materials can be used in the production of smart phone screens and chips, while corrosion inhibitors can be used in the semiconductor industry. Foreign media expect the relevant Japanese departments to issue an official statement on these new restrictions as early as July 1.
According to the report, from July 4, Japanese exporters will need to apply for export licenses to export these goods to South Korea, with an application period of up to 90 days. The fluorinated polyimide produced in Japan accounts for 90% of the world's total output, and the etching gas production accounts for 70% of the world's total output. This restriction will affect Korean manufacturers such as LG and Samsung. Because LG and Samsung produce OLED panels for Apple's iPhone, it may be difficult for Apple to purchase enough screens for 2019 iPhone, and it is expected that iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Max will be affected.
Apple may have no other choice. The company recently invested $100 million in Japan Display. The latter provides LCD screens for iPhone XR and OLED screens for Apple Watch. However, Japanese display companies started late in the OLED field and may not be able to meet the demand of Apple's new iPhone in terms of quality and quantity, so the early stock of new iPhones this year may be insufficient.
